The big box hardware stores slowly put the real hardware stores out of business. Then the big box hardware stores started cutting back their hardware inventory themselves.

Then lo and behold, ACE snuck back in while nobody was looking. There is one in the Pearl district of Portland, (don't ask me how I know:confused:), and they are very well stocked. The ACE in Willamette is also very well stocked with real hardware.

When a hardware store went out of business, TV show host of Jeopardy, Alex Trebek bought the entire inventory and installed it in his basement.

I'm so freaking happy they put one in Hillsboro.

I had one right down the street from me in Reno and when I moved here the nearest one wasn't worth trying to get to.

I went there for the 1st time today. I was smiling the whole time. Like a kid in a candy store.
The Ace store here is flush with AR15s and other nice rifles, shotguns and handguns.

I find Ace is typically spendier than the big stores for bulk consumables (paint, cleaners, poisons, etc.), but they are indeed a hardware store with a superior selection of twisty, turny, thready things. And handy.

Not a complaint, but a caveat, Seaside Ace (that I know of) is an individually owned franchise store, so a return with a receipt must go back to Seaside, not just any Ace. That was volunteered by a helpful guy in that store when I wasn't sure what size door guide I needed. They might all be.

And with that said, ALL the Aces I've encountered offered knowledgeable customer service, sometimes a crap-shoot in other places depending upon who you get.

That's if you can even find someone in those orange vests.

That's why I like ace. Their employees actually ask you if you need help, not the other way around. I've yet been in an Ace and not found what I need, or had a hard time finding someone to help.

Took this today at the 185th & TV store C61IfHvvJwGtyn844De5w0Y6WHUfXVwar2-Gd4lzHxHTy9Y0_apjv9WOUAl2p8KGvsmdGlkD4WW3ymEK_=w2327-h1745-no.jpg
(mini-blue healer. days old)
There was a 3rd puppy at the registers.

I've delivered to that store... a real PITA w a 75' long truck, but doable w some curb action.

I use my ACE here in SE PDX whenever possible. I have a story about the Gresham Lowes (which led to me walking out p*ssed and placing a $2000 order w Parr), but I'll leave it at that... it's long and boring.

As a Parr employee, thank you for your patronage!

That is the creepy crawl store of hardware. Shuffling down the isle at a snail pace to search through so much stuff packed in a tiny place, wait that sounds just like my garage! It must be the mother ship.

They cut me a key (I already had the blank) for 50 cents. The high school kids at ACE are willing to try and help, I hear the folks at HD complain and say they can't give advice because then they are liable when someone screws up.

I knew I liked that guy.
Speaking of smarmy game-show hosts... ever see Chuck (Love Connection) Woolery's video on AR15s?
Chuck's a gun guy... who knew or woulda guessed? This goes back to 2012 and I've watched it pretty closely looking for satire and/or irony but I think, hamminess aside, he's for real. Mabye a little goofy, but for real.

Hell with advice, I just want to be able to find someone to help me find something in the store. At Ace they literally come to you and ask. I've always experienced this before and was very happy to experience this when I went into this one.

I have literally witnessed employees that work at Home Depot see me, turn and walk in the other direction.

My coworker tells me this Ace is at 25th @ Cornell
Turn South on 25th, pull in by the iHOP - opposite of the Alby's.

Which makes me feel blind, as I go thru that intersection twice each working day.
I might have to get some Taco's and check it out after work.
