Okay sounds kind of funny but me and some buddies have a contest going we're going to have 4 position shooting at 50, 100, and 200 yards maybe eventually Reach Out further than that but at this time that's what the range allows us but there is a $200 cap on the rifle scope package. So I either need to find a $150 or so rifle that I can put a scope on mind you it won't be much of a scope or a complete package for $200 I realize it will be tough to find something capable of shooting two to three hundred yard distances for that money but I thought maybe a project or ugly rifle, barreled action that I could stock......

Best shot at this is probably pawn. Mention how far you want to drive and maybe someone here can report something they have seen? That budget is limiting but often a pawn shop may have some old rifle from back in the days of the catalog stores. Like Sears, Wards and such. These guns were made by one of the big names and then just marked for the store. Got to still be a lot of them floating around. May stumble on one in great mechanical shape at that price. Easy to find my Serial # which maker actually made the gun and go from there. Of course need to tell how far you want to travel to look at what someone reports finding. Will be interesting to see what you come up with if this works.

I would travel probably from portland to centrailia? Funny, two of the guys own/work at a pawn shop, so we've come up with some interesting rules on purchasing the rifle. Gonna have best 5 of 6 monthly shoots, and yes there is a purse at the end. Think it'll be fun

I've seen used Rossi's in .223 for around $175 but that might take a while to find.

I'd suggest looking for an older off-brand hunting rifle, like an older Sears, Western Field, or JC Higgins. I also have an older Mossberg 800A that is a surprisingly good budget rifle.

If you're only reaching out a few hundred yds I'd go with a pawn-shop bargain piece like @ConcernedCitizen said. Look into some of the many names that were sold at discount stores... all made by the "Big boys" but rebadged for economic reasons. I've seen some pretty decent-looking Chinese knockoff rifles and shotguns in the racks too, but have never actually bought one.
Caliber isn't much of a concern at that distance, but I'm not 100% sold on a .22lr past 100yds. That may very well be a "me" problem, not a "you" problem.
Good luck w the hunt... sounds like a fun challenge.

ok, thanks to a member on nwf. Who was good enough to give me a great deal on a spanish mauser m1893 in 7x57 and a scope. I get to attempt my first drill and tap job. I bought a nice jig from another member last year. Had several good offers, thank you everyone. Might be a while, but will try to figure out the forum and keep you posted. I have to shut this one down, all these deals are very tempting!!
