Personally I gotta stick with my 'Classic' Winchester Mod 94 .30-30s...

Loaded lightly they are cheap, all day shooters!

Roosevelt apparently had a 1876 in 45-75 and a 1886 in .45-90

(IIRC,) the original .50-95 was an "Express" cartridge that used a light-for-caliber bullet and had a different twist rate than the more standard .50-90 or .50-100 rounds.
In a .50 cal. a 350 gr bullet is short and fat, and pretty light, and no matter how fast it is at the muzzle it's not going to "carry" like a longer heavier bullet with superior BC.
Yeah, I'd still take a .45-70 over a .500 mag.

I love everything about it, except the price. Big Horn has them showing between $3—4K; neat, but I can't come to peace with that price. And I have to many lever actions as it is. And, oh yah, a .500 out of a carbine has to be a freight train.
Recoil is substantially less than you'd think. Big Horn takes a while to get you yours. Mine was I believe $2800 or so when purchased (Mine is threaded for a can and has the rail as well) It would have been I think 4500 by the delivery as mine was customized a bit. It is a quality gun that is striking in feel and recoil seriously is not what I was expecting.

I think the biggest lever action caliber was a 50-110, I the 50 S&W would run close to that.

I sold my single shot 500 S&W Mag because it was not pleasant to shoot, not at all. My revolver in said chambering is much better. A rifle puts all the recoil into your shoulder and hits hard. A revolver uses both wrists, elbows, and shoulders for recoil. If you don't believe me, buy it, shoot it a few rounds and then park it in the safe forever. I'm a recoil junky but did not like the rifle one bit.

Henry 45-70 $999

Henry brass color 45 LC $849

The bha is much more pleasant than a handi rifle or encore. I know, shot all 3. The encore took a chunk Out of my hand from the strap stud. 3 rounds out of the encore and I haven't put the barrel back on. The bha is pleasant enough to shoot all day if you could afford it.

I looked into the Bighorn at first but didn't think I'd shoot it much and settled for the NEF. Had some fun with it but ultimately moved on to other interests. Now, I still have my X Frame in 500 and that sees regular use still.

Let me add in that for the 460, use of 454 or 45 colt is going to be hand feeding as it will not feed rounds that much shorter through use of the lever. The 500 just is more fun in my opinion

Fun is the reason I had a 500. Wasn't interested in packing it around, even tough I bought a holster for it. The carbine probably doesn't weigh much more than that revolver did!

It's a smidge heavier than my 45-70 marlin, but some of that is the scope and suppressor. The suppressor practically has its own zip code as the darn thing adds 11.5 inches or so.

All of which helps cancel recoil, but I like my levers bare, even if that limits me due to my crappy eyesight.

My thoughts are more not to concuss myself too heavily with muzzle blast. And the scope is more to see over the suppressor. For a good while I was dealing with a health issue which made muzzle blast less comfortable.

New England Firearms made their SB2 single shot rifle in this chambering. Just now I was looking on Google to see when they were made, as I know it was toward the latter part of the time this design was sold. Well, the AI answer said they don't exist, but I know that isn't true. So much for the reliability of AI information. Even with the fairly hefty NEF barrels, I'd think recoil would be substantial, as the gun itself doesn't have all that much mass. They sell for semi-stupid money on Gunbroker.

I owned one of those, not sure of the manufacture date on it. Was a fun blaster!
