This is an interesting topic. It may be difficult to extrapolate from the North American perspective to the European experience. Actually, the population of Slovakia has been relatively stable since the turn of the century. In fact, the growth rate has been declining and recently turned negative.

As a rural property owner, I have had several accidental encounters with N. American black bears, and do not particularly fear them, as they are generally just as willing as I am to head the other direction, but the European brown bear is the same species as the grizzly, which is a different animal altogether.

Working with black bears for alot of years i rarely have seen aggressive ones. The ones that have been aggressive have had good reason

Google AI:

  • A study investigating 664 brown bear attacks worldwide between 2000 and 2015 recorded significantly more attacks in Europe (n = 291) compared to North America (n = 183).
  • Eastern Europe's Contribution: Within Europe, Romania accounted for the highest number of attacks (n = 131), followed by Slovakia (n = 54).
