Interesting article but it really doesn't say much other than they are sticking their fingers in the leaks while the dam is crashing around them.

I mean while they say 'the population remains more or less stable at around 1,270 animals' it would be interesting to know if this is a long term number or say rose abruptly and then stabilized if that is in fact the case.

Also it would be interesting to see stats that show the increase in human population and if that of the bears numbers followed this.

I am certainly not a wild life biologist but it seems to me while reducing the population might temporarily reduce attacks as the population of bears (and people) increases the bears only become increasingly less afraid of humans, will continue to move closer in and attacks will only increase exponentially.

""We can't live in a country where people are afraid to go into the woods," the prime minister told reporters afterwards."

Dumbest thing Ive read all day. Lets go kill hundreds of bears cause 1 person went in the woods and got mauled so people can feel safe in bear habitat. Im guessing they dont allow hunting bears there....

I agree....I've only had one situation where "mass" killing of bears was justified. That was a human caused problem and could have been avoided if one agency would have done there job

It would be interesting to get a general consensus as to the understanding of the bears by the average population of the citizens.

Do they understand the bears are dangerous creatures or do they see them as Yogi and Boo Boo?

Is hiking, outdoor sports, the environment etc a long term undertaking or something relatively new with not so much of a long term history - and the people are just heading out with little to no caution?

My experience being a hiker here is most people just head out with little to no caution for predators. The few times one has attacked a hiker here and fish and game culls it someone screams cruelty, bans hunting dogs, bans hunting and just blindly believes predators can coexist with humans as their numbers increase from hunting bans.

Who was killed? Was it a tourist?

Was it self defense?

I don't like Bears.

I hear Bear spray works best, but I don't want to be that close to a Bear.

Have you ever shot a Bear with a pistol? They don't just fall over dead. They have time to hurt you.

I used to enjoy the woods a lot more. Then I had bear encounters. Now my head is on a swivel while in the woods.
Sometimes death is not as bad as what dies inside a person. :) :) :)

Carry on.

Well if you have the dummies like we have here in the USA?
This was kinda sorta my thought as well, IE thinking that MAYBE those who were attacked were playing teddy bear with a live one and totally overlooked the danger OR like in the case of MANY who get attacked by buffalo it was obviously a case of 'Hey, look at me' as they approached the buffalo in a 'self indulgent' manner and what appears to be a total lack of regard for the safety warnings. Kinda like that dumb azz woman in the biker group a few years ago. She's damn lucky to have survived that after being thrown around like a rag doll.

Take AK for example. Look how many interface with Brown Bears there and how few attacks there are. Maybe this IS because the people have a realistic knowledge of the danger, take it seriously and heed the warnings.

I mean take Tim Treadwell for example. He an his GF wouldn't have been eaten by the bears if they hadn't decided to go live with them.

One thing many people (me included) don't immediately realize is how small some European countries are, compared to the US.

Slovakia has around 1300 brown bears, but the country is about 1/5 the size of Oregon.
