I'm thinking about swapping a 338 Federal barrel on to my savage and was wondering about bullet expansion. It's only a 20" barrel so I'll lose a little velocity from that. Considering it doesn't have a whole lot of speed to start with what would be a good choice for quick opening bullets on deer. I'm looking at the Barnes TTSX 185gr. or possibly a Northfork 200gr. Other possibilities are the Speer or Hornady 200's. I'd choose the Barnes if I was sure it would open at low speed-I've heard the new plastic tip helps expansion even at slow velocities. The Northfork looks awesome at low speed but the price-OUCH! Anybody with low velocity .338 bullet experience?
