The news team at Salem Reporter has assembled a panel of experts to share with the community the facts about surging gun violence in the community. This powerful program will pull back the curtains on this safety threat – and share how any citizen can make a difference. Hear what young men engaged in the violence have to say.

Doors open: 5 p.m.
Program start: 6 p.m.
Program end: 8 p.m.

City of Salem completed a study last November and OHSU just received funding to complete their own study.

I think we do well to be involved and have input if we wish to fend off the gun grabbers. I believe the results of the studies help to put us on the offensive, and I'd like to continue in that mode instead of always playing defense. Presently, all of the groups that proport to be for "gun safety" have been putting all of their effort into attacking law abiding citizens instead of attacking criminals. We can either get involved or continue to play keyboard commando on the internet and then *itch about how the new laws suck. Personally, I'm getting involved, instead of playing sad man.

The dissolution of the gang task force is behind most of the gun crime in Salem, and most of said crime is confined to certain neighborhoods and certain demos i.e., single men under 30 dealing in drugs.

Neighborhood social media outlets (like the Ring Doorbell app) are making it sound like a suburban warzone when in fact Salem is not a warzone. Every night some idiot posts something about "gun shots fired!" whenever teenagers are playing with fireworks, or a souped up Honda backfires. And of course a dozen other idiots respond "I heard the gunshots too!"

Neighborhood social media outlets (like the Ring Doorbell app) are making it sound like a suburban warzone when in fact Salem is not a warzone at all. Every night some idiot posts something about "gun shots fired!" whenever teenagers are playing with fireworks, or a souped up Honda backfires up the street. And of course a dozen other idiots respond "I heard it the gunshots too!"
The sad part is that most others believe them. I find it funny how some will preface their statement by describing their qualifications first before saying that is how they KNOW they were gun shots. Lots of experts there, far more than I imagined.

I wonder if the organizers of this event would be offended if there were individuals passing out bags of popcorn to the attendees as they entered this town hall meeting. :s0093:

FWIW, Salem PD is starting a six person team to focus on gun violence. link here

Sorry that it's behind a paywall, no idea if any of the other outlets are covering this.

Most of the "gun violence" is in known crime areas.. where for some reason despite each county hiring more cops and raising their pay and pensions.. oddly enough they don't send more cops there during key crime hours.. no instead they have moto-cops and suburban cops ticket people in the morning before work and right after school gets out.. why? Because minor moving violations make the counties money.. and instead of applying those cops to key crime areas during key crime times, they are too busy ginning up money for the county in the low crime hours in fairly safe areas.. busy ticketing people they know will simply pay the fine(s) because they have jobs and families to get to..

Oh and let's not forget about political catch and release or "they don't have enough money we can extort, so let's shuffle them out of the judicial system as quickly as possible" game that just keeps criminals on the streets without so much as a slap on the wrist.

And to think simply having those same revenue generating task forces applied to key crime areas during key crime hours.. suddenly a whole lot of "gun crime" would be halted.. or solved. Then again, counties tied to corrupt money can't have that.. because solving problems dries up funding in this era. Inflated admin salaries don't get those big continued bucks, those pointless studies don't get the same funding.. lots of corrupt cogs in the corrupt machine suddenly halt when problems actually get solved.

Meanwhile they (our government officials) stoop to banning guns or proposing to ban guns as if that stops the violence of human nature, which will continue with or without firearms and most likely will get far more brutal in the long run once firearms are banned. It'll be something that never goes away. This world is not a utopia no matter how many politically pandering flags you fly outside of a government building or how many laws you pass restricting citizens rights to self preservation.

The Salem gun violence study and subsequent public work session was one of the precursors to this event. There is no way to post the study or conclusions here since we can't post .pdf files. Here's a link to the meeting agenda. The study is on page 2 as attachments. I highly recommend arming yourself with the information so you can ask legitimate questions.

Yes, expect to see the red t-shirt gang there. Just ignore them, it's the wrestling with a pig thing.

Let me know if you need a ticket and I'll make sure to have some available at the door. They're free, the venue just needs to keep track of how many people are coming.

The name of the report should be changed to Gang Violence Problem Analysis and the name of the event should be changed to Gang Violence Town Hall.
This is exactly why need people to get involved in order to change the narrative. The left will continue to blame guns instead of the criminals unless we do more to change this.

Getting involved at this level is a good start. There is still a crap ton of work to do, but we need to get involvement at the community level and be visible.

Why? Are the people publishing this study too stupid to read their own study to a conclusion that GANGS are a large of the problem? And for some reason, if WE show up and tell them that they will all-of-a-sudden, see the light?
They took 5 years to come up with these results?

I'm going to try and make it. I watched the event recently when they talked about the study (mentioned previously). The study is worth a read and pretty much mirrors the one's done in Portland, twice. Guns are not the issue, a small number of career criminals are. The average shooting suspect (and victims) have numerous priors and are no stranger to the criminal justice system.

City of Salem commissioned the study, they did not conduct it. It didn't take five years to do the study, it used data over five years. Yes, everyone knows it's a gang problem and that was the main topic of conversation at the city of Salem workshop last month. Increased police presence, especially at the detective level, in the high crime area of NW Salem was brought up by the chief of police. School board members brought up the topic of bringing SRO's back to Salem. Retired congressman Cameron brought up the topic of recidivism, and the affects on the community.

Frankly, I'm tired of playing defense. The Giffords/Bloomberg subsidized, red shirt, rude, left wing mafia are controlling the narrative and direction of political action, and it's up to us to stand up for ourselves. We need to call them out at these events and put the blame where it belongs, and point out that it's directly tied to liberal policies that allow criminals to escape societal responsibility.
