Before the SW 686 came along my favorite .357s were Ruger Security Sixes. I had one snubby for urban concealed and a 6" for a (concealed) woods gun and home defense gun.

I think the most iconic classic S&W is the model 36 Chief's Special.

I really enjoy my 686+, but the 586 L-comp has my heart.
I would like to know just how different that L-comp is from my model 19 carry comp. They seem like almost the same gun, except yours has an extra round and a couple more ounces...

It's been a while, but I used to have a Model 28, 4" , and probably the most accurate revolver I've ever shot. Many other Smith revolvers have come and gone.

Decades later, I own a 686 and a 629. I can't compare these new revolvers to the one I no longer have, but both these newer Smith's are truly wonderful too.

The 686 is the perfect revolver. Maybe the 586 if you prefer blued steel to stainless. Don't know if those are classic models or not... They sure are my favorite
Agreed. I have a 586 6" and that is the most accurate handgun I have ever owned.

The one I always wanted, but never could find a clean reasonably priced example, was the 28-2 w/ 4" bbl.

If .38/.357 weren't so expensive I would own more revolvers.

My favorite S&W was a 6 1/2" 629 Classic that I sold years ago to feed the family. I'll replace it someday, I am addicted to the stainless wheel guns but lately I've been shooting my new to me pre lock 8 3/8" 529 with non fluted cylinder. I can post some pics when I get home from my chemo treatment. I have been getting into the moon clip wheel guns too as it's something different that most people don't see very often.

I'm a fan of S&W K-frames. Something about the size and weight seems to hit a sweet spot. Prelock Model 66/65's are just such fun. Shame the 3" prelock models are challenging to find and pricey. I guess I'm not the only one keeping an eye out for them. ;)

Just for the fun: what are you all time favorite classic, rather than necessarily contemporary, Smith & Wesson revolvers? It can be ones you currently own, did in the past, or are on the lookout for now. And since "classic" is completely subjective, no real hard'n'fast rules. Just S&W goodness.

Enjoy. :)
My Dad was a Boston cop during WW2 and carried a SW model 10 I remember him letting me shoot it when I 5 although he had his hands rapped around mine but I was so proud. I have owned one since I was legally able to. I still have my first model 10 with a 4 inch barrel and always will. I all so have a model 10 with a 2 1/2 barrel although my son thinks it's his. I also had a model 60 2 inch. I have many SW semi autos, but that heart I'm just a wheel man

SW model 28 .357 mag. 6". Had one back in 1980s and found I liked the size and weight of the N frame. "Hmmmm," said I. "If I'm carrying a gun that size and weight anyway, maybe I could..."

Model 28--gateway drug to .44 mag.
