Bought an AR15 flat and a DPMS style AR10 flat from theflatspot.net they're going to be heavy but on the plus side recoil should be minimal. I'm going to start with the AR15, it's getting a welded on fixed steel stock too.

I'll be getting access to a CNC plasma cutter in the next couple weeks so I haven't really started working on it yet, but here's the plans. It's going to have a 1911ish pistol grip and forward grip with walnut scales and there's going to be a walnut accent for the stock. I'm debating if I should try my hand at a steel handguard or just stick with modding a hogue free float tube. I'm thinking the handguard would just be way to heavy.

Handguard idea: You could drill a 1" hole down the middle of a baseball bat, then slot it for the FSP/gasblock/tube. Not sure how you'd secure it in place and keep it from turning, but might give that wood look nicely... damn heavy to be sure, but it'd be in keeping with the wood-and-steel character.

That would look cool, but I think that would be too much wood for me. The thought that keeps coming to my mind is something like a ppsh 41 but I haven't figured out a good way to install it with a pinned front sight. Maybe have the bottom be screwed on, or I could just leave it open like a pps 43.

Or, yo could get a Keymod or M-Lok and use nuts and bolts to mount individual wood sections--maybe just the bottom five and leave the 10:30and 1:30 surfaces open for cooling.

I figured out a way to make the ppsh style handguard work. Now the question is do I want to do all that work.

With some "distressed" work and some high silicon bronze content Sil/Fos that would look sweet!

Yeah, I TIG welded one together just to see what it was like..... Not really a fan.

They had a pps at my local gun shop the other day... Postolized of course. we were talking about longer barrels vs pistol vs sbr. It's always been of my favorites from WWII. I love the looks especially the heat shield, so I am curious to see how this turns out. 5.56 is a big improvement over the 7.62 Toke.

Yeah I had a pps43, in its semi-auto pistol form it's pretty lack luster. The with a stock and fun switch it's better but it's still pretty crude compared to the ppsh41 or thompson. And the lack of a lower handguard sucks when you just got done dumping the mag and you grab the forend. Don't ask me how I know that.

That steel AR15 should really reduce that 5.56 recoil!!!
