At LEAST it's reversible and NOT permanent - unlike some of the things that get done to guns...

model 1894 standard barrel length 20" round for carbines 26" round or octagon for rifles, all other barrels lengths were special order.

rifles could be ordered with 14" to 36" barrel.
carbines as short as 12" are rumored to exist
Winchester would make any combination the customer wanted, barrel ,stock ,magazine length etc.
