I have the good fortune of obtaining a new Sig rifle of my choice at no cost. I am hoping to get as much of a "do all" rifle in one. I hope to use it to hunt deer and elk. Close in and distance shooting (when I say distance, I feel like 500 yards is a push). I would ideally have something that I can shoulder but also shoot prone across a valley. I don't feel comfortable shooting too far out as I'm not out to wound an animal without certainty of shot placement. Listing my options in a poll and appreciate the input. Caliber options I am considering are 300WM and 308.

Between those two calibers I would pick the 308. The 300wm is way too much power. The 308 isnt the flattest shooter but wont matter under 500yds.
Not really a fan of either, if i had my pick for an optimal do all hunting rifle it would be something in a 7mm caliber.

deer - 308
elk- 300 Win Mag
close <300 yards - 308
far - >300 yards 300 Win Mag

6.5 . . .

Something to consider here in the world of firearms....
"Do all"...often ends up being "one size fits none."

I like and have used both cartridges for hunting deer and elk.
That said...
My hunting with both was a Hell of a lot closer than 500 yards.

I have shot living beings at 500 yards or more with both cartridges
Granted these were not deer or elk ...nor was it hunting , in the usual meaning.

Both cartridges worked well in the either of the above examples.
Of the two....I prefer the .308 as "Do All"...as much as I dislike that term.
For me...the .300WM is a fine cartridge...but too much for how , where and what I hunt.

As for the rifles....
I can't really comment...or vote...
They are not to my liking at all

Of these cartridge choices, I'd pick 308, but not from such a stubby barrel.
Of these rifle/cartridge choices, as much as I hate to admit it, I'd pick the 6.5.
If that 308 came with a 20 or 22" barrel, it would be a better hunting package.

Thanks for the feedback. Not sure if it matters, but I am planning to suppress.

For what you want the calibers Id look closely at are the 6.5 Creedmore, 6.5 PRC, 7mm PRC.
Me id go with the 7mmPRC hands down.
