About 20 years ago I attended the first gun show I'd been to in a very long time. I was shocked with the amount of suppressors I saw attached to guns on tables there. the gun mags I'd been following weren't ones to promote suppressor use and I was actually quite unaware as to how common they were.

After being a car guy forever and having to deal with noise regulations on the street and at some racing venues, I was shocked by the hypocrisy of how hard it was to be able to silence a firearm.

It's all bubblegumin politics.

Did more recent/frequent silencer use by our military (i.e. Gulf War, Iraq, Afghanistan) perhaps influence their popularity stateside?

In my redneck opinion, the popularity of military style weapons and accessories increased dramatically during and since the GWOT and has corresponded with the popularity of first person shooter video games. (I have no data to back this opinion, so it's just my two cents. Take that for what it's worth) To me, it stands to reason that the proliferation of suppressor ownership may correspond.

The popularity of my little pony also went up during the same timeframe. Must be related.

For years in WA you could own a suppressor but couldn't use it (yes, I'm serious). After that changed, all of a sudden you started seeing them a lot in gun stores, and with more and more variety.
