These are not "Zombie" or Necro-Threads"....
Those two terms may be offensive to members of our community.

After all how many of us have seen folks shuffling through their day totally unaware of their surroundings...having surrendered their free will to a gluttonous workplace or willingly becoming a slave to a "magic" box or rectangle full of the succubus seductions of electronic bliss...
These folks having feeling you know...

And as for Necro well , many folks are indeed "dead" and need coffee to reanimate or at least revive themselves..

Anyway the new correct terms are:
Vintage and or classic...
Use 'em often and enjoy 'em....:D

From one vintage classic to another ...... you got it Andy. :s0155::s0090:

We should be pleased that folks are googling guns, and are getting hits from this site, albeit older threads. And when they find what they're looking for, the last thing they're caring about is how long ago this thread was created. It's new information to them, and if they feel compelled to respond, I think it's a good thing.

When I was a very young adult, I used to buy and read gun magazines from 20+ years prior. Although the articles were 20 years old, they were as relevant as if they'd been written today.

I like these "blast from the past" threads. They can still be relevant and can give new members lots of info as well as possibly remind older members of an earlier topic that may still be have value.
If it was worth something then.... it should still have value now.

Okay, okay....I won't roll my eyes and snork next time I'm 10 posts deep into a thread and thinking that these are a bunch of new posters, when they're really posters that haven't been active for four years. Very good points made.

Maybe a little "literary situational awareness" is in order. :p:D

I'll tell ya what...

For a feller that could hide his own Easter eggs, I don't see many old posts any more.

And every night, I watch new episodes of M*A*S*H.

I also am not sure what you mean with your first post title. Would it be possible just to define what you want to say in plain English using short easy words sosss this Old Coot can understand what you are trying to say?

Are you alluding to old posts being re used? Also I do not understand why that should be a problem. An old post subject may be a good new post discussion. There should not be any stigma resurrecting such if needed.

Respectfully.

Plain old guy English; I was referring to a couple different scenarios that had been repeated a few times over the last few days.
Example 1. Dredging up a 4 year old rifle listing to ask if it's still for sale. That bumps it to the top of the list. The person who was inquiring would have had better luck sending a private message to the seller.
Example 2. A member responds to a long dormant news thread just to say, "What an idiot." Again, bumping it to the top of the list for no reason. Neither threads have any relevance at this point and neither response served any purpose.
It's just forum life. It causes a little clutter but I'm not mad about it or anything, just pointing out that it seemed to be on the rise lately.
On the flip side, I love it when someone posts updates on olds news stories about how they played out. I also find a lot of value in resolved technical threads where guys are trying to troubleshoot a problem.

^^^ I'm with this guy:cool:

Forums have a life cycle.

One of the signs that a forum has peaked and is transitioning to a downward slope is when longtime members start complaining about what other people post.

Yep, noticing more newbs lately! It's good for the site! :)

Going with the hot rod magazines:

Reading them or reading them a second time has value.

Are you going to write a letter to the editor of the magazine 5/10/15 or more years later cuz you want to comment on it?

I never advocated deleting content, it adds great value to the web site.

All I said was that there is no reason to post on an old thread unless it is relevant or adds value.

I know I'm a dinosaur and have little to contribute of value. Remember Soylent Green?

I frequent another collector site. Old threads are often brought to the surface, and often by younger fellers who have an interest. Their contribution to a thread may not seem to have value to some of us, but it was important enough the the newer person to bring it to the top. And if it had value to him, maybe there's another feller who's never seen the discussion either.

What's important to one person may bore the heck out of somebody else. I'm not the relevance police. Another site that I frequent, there are some crotchety old coots that as soon as a question is asked, one of these old coots will answer as sarcastically as possible, reminding the person that the same question was asked in 1974, and if the new person would google it, he wouldn't waste our time. And we lose new people to our hobby.

So...There are certainly generational differences on this and any forum that crosses generations. I am more tolerant than other folks, and I'm sure not gonna make someone feel unwelcome just to prove to the world that I know more than they do.

Good points;)

It seems to me there are more positive comments regarding the value of vintage posts than negative comments about them. In any case, there doesn't seem to be a statistically significant number of members complaining about vintage posts anyway.

Based on all that, it would appear that this forum has not peaked and is not transitioning downward.

So we've got that going for us. :s0155::s0090:

I also have noticed that in the main, Forums do seem to have a shelf life. Some old hot busy growing Forums that I used to frequent that still exist sometimes have gone down hill, then dormant and have not had one new post in weeks or even months.

How much does it cost to run and maintain a big busy Forum? I have no idea but suspect the expense in time and money could be considerable. One would think that resuscitating old dead post subjects might be a way to re introduce fresh interest?

Dunno that fur sures.

I like all of it; why I keep coming back..

I particularly like the gripes, the compliments, the complaints, the old posts, the new posts, the newbies, the old timers, the sarcasms, the facetiousness(es), the seriousness(es), the ambiguities, the TMIs, the SNAFUs, the perlocutions, the illocutions, the congruence, the incongruence, the in-groups, the out-groups, and the FUBARs....all of it.

Thanks NWFA :s0004:
