Well, last year I had a neighbor that lived behind my backyard fence in a small house. The property line was obscured with trees. We had great privacy. Then he sold his property and they built 6 townhouses on the lot. And took out all the trees. The first unit was rented this last spring. The town houses are ten feet behind my fence, if that, and now we have to keep our blinds shut because everyone can see directly into our bedroom and kitchen.

These are supposedly "affordable" 2 bedroom units that rent for $1650 a month. They don't take section 8 or any of the welfare assistance programs and are all rented by hard working people, at least 5 of the 6 units are. They are 900 sq ft units.

The first person to occupy one of the units, got in a fight with her boyfriend, screaming and yelling at 2 am. They woke me. That was during the summer and I was sleeping with my window open. The next day, I called the landlord and told him what happened and he said he'd talk to them.

He called me back and they said it was somebody else. I called BS on that as I watched them fighting from 20 feet away from my bedroom window. He said if I filed a police report if it happened again, he would kick em out. That was back in late June or early July.

Well, about a week ago, the same resident was fighting with her boyfriend outside, and the neighbors in the unit next to her were trying to calm them down. The boyfriend took a swing at her, I could see that much. But the neighbors threatened to call the cops, and the thug boyfriend left. The next night he was back, but left quickly after banging on her door and being told by their neighbor to leave.

I never made a report to the police, because I don't want to have my name on the report where the thug boyfriend and his thug buddies can come after me to harass or hurt me or my wife. As long as they stay on their side of the fence, I'm not getting involved. The last time, there were witnesses from the unit next to them. They can call the police.

I was talking to the guy that has lived next to me for the last 15 years, and he heard them fighting too. I told him that I saw the thug take a swing at the female. And he asked what I was gonna do. And I told him "nothing". If they stay out of my property and don't try to hurt me, I'm not doing anything. My neighbor asked me if I would use deadly force to help her if I could see him strangling or stabbing her. I said "Absolutley Not."

My neighbor knows that I'm armed and he is too. I explained to him that I am armed to defend myself, my wife, and my home. I am not armed to do the job of the police in protecting someone stupid enough to let a piece of bubblegum, unemployed thug live within her walls if he decides to use violence against her. If he's not pointing a gun at me directly, he's never going to see my firearm.

If he stabs her or something, and I see it, well then that's a job for the police. I'm not intervening with deadly force if my life or that of my wife isn't threatened. I don't want to go to jail, court, or go through a civil suit over someone I don't know, who was stupid enough to let an unemployed thug stay with her. And to let him come back after he's assaulted her, and she did nothing to help herself. I'm sorry, but my gun is staying in the safe.

What would you guys do? This seems to me to be a job for the police. Not for an armed neighbor to act like the police. As far as I'm concerned, if she doesn't want to arm and protect herself, and keeps letting this POS come back, that's on her.

I would mind my own business like you have been.

Don't be a Wilson.

Build a 12-foot-high concrete wall that completely surrounds your property.

Seriously, this is one difficult situation for a homeowner to deal with.
Sometimes the only logical thing to do is move.

You've already said it, you're armed to protect yourself and your loved ones, not the public at large. Nothing wrong with that stance. Certainly nothing wrong with putting your family first. We're all responsible for our own safety and protection. You're not a sworn law enforcement officer. Plant a nice row of abhor verde and call it a day…

Yeah, it's a shame that the 50 year old trees were on the other side of the fence. I can't put a fence up higher than 6 feet, according to the city. We keep our blinds closed at all times now.

When they start acting up, it's at night, and our yard is dark. We can see em through the slats in the blinds. Their lights are on in the yard on their side all night. Kinda like looking at the screen at a drive in movie theater.

My Pitbull gets up in the middle of the night and will go out in the yard if an animal comes in the back, and I would imagine if a person came in the back, it wouldn't turn out well for them.

You're SCREWED. That's how cities in Oregon treat their citizens now. By going into the cities and building dwellings stacking people in neighborhood closer and closer together and stacked high. With little, or no off street parking. Completely ignoring an important law of nature that is proven by putting too many rats in a cage.
Your only choices are to move, or live with it, ignoring it, and keeping your blinds close 24/7. Nothing more, nothing less.

Once every six months? Inside city limits? Sounds pretty minor.

Maybe you could start a petition, call the city council, start an HOA, set up $5k worth of surveillance cameras, ask the police for drive bys, get a pack of dobermans, make sure your back yard is illuminated like Wrigley field.

Or maybe, just go back to bed.

Stay out of it but I would also install a hard wired always recording HD security camera system to monitor everything around your home and if it catches a little bit beyond, then so be it....

I think you should set up a perimeter. Install trip wires, cameras and have flare launchers and high lumen strobe lights on hand so you can disorient the boyfriend long enough to get a bead on him. Remember, keep plenty of zip tie handcuffs around and make sure they are hanging in the most tactical position on your body armor. Don't forget to announce that this is your property and you'll patrol with an AR slung low ready whenever you damn well please. Plenty of staring (by you) while you field strip your 1911 in the backyard in your boxers goes a long way as well.

NR :D That sucks but the best thing to do is stay out of it. Not on your property, not your problem.

I was just kind of joking, but now . . . 🤔
I just edited ordered another set, I have poor lighting in my home, so one of those lights pointed at the ceiling on a smart outlet gives great interior lights as it reflects off the ceiling down...

Also use these in a friend's shop. The attic spaces have barely any light and was not fun getting through.. now we have several lights plus others and are adding more to fully illuminate those spaces...

About to add more to another space for visibility.

One room, a fire control room/furnace in the commercial space, the socket for the light died so we installed an 80w version and it puts out so much light, we have left it in place instead of replacing the old socket....

I don't wake up very well, so I run a light in my bedroom on a smart timer so every morning, I get daylight about an hour before, so I wake up better.

Also have lower powered ones for my porch lights but they point up at the eve to diffuse the light so not too annoy the neighbors, one I need to replace as it has finally gone out after years of use but it had a weird motion sensor system that broke but it was great while it lasted and lasted quite a while...
