Late to the party but what 'grinds my gears' ? Well lots of things but ONE being musicians who try to imitate an ORIGINAL who should NEVER BE IMITATED unless they sound 100% like the person.
There is NOTHING worse than hearing a happy, joyful voice imitating a original, soulful, 'bluesy' song by Hank Williams SR., Johnny Cash, Elvis, or probably the worst - on that show 'America Idol' years ago when some kid tried to pull off Freddy Mercury on 'Bohemian Rhapsody'.

As a longtime 'amateur' musician/guitar/banjo player and singer I have ALWAYS maintained never imitating a musician I could NOT even come close to.
I will admit I was able to come close to a few, and once got a standing ovation by a large crowd at the end of 'Jungleland' by Springsteen who I was able to imitate quite closely on a few of his songs, but often a musician needs to have a 'feeling' and 'connection' to the song to be able to perform it - and be able to imitate the original.
I also once stood up in a bar an performed a 'duo' with the leader of the band, a gal who was hoping to find someone who could perform the 'Picture' by Kid Rock with her which I believe I did well - but she sounded EXACTLY like Sheryl Crow.

Another good one - a while back I was perusing YT and saw something about a 'cover' of the 'Devil went down to GA' done by two girls.
Well, these two homespun girls in midwestern dresses started out and well, I clicked 'stop' when the singer got to the part 'SHE was lookin' for a soul to steal'.....

Johnny Cash covering Nine Inch Nail's Hurt, is damn amazing, considering how NIN is such a different genre of music.
I didn't realize that was a cover. Probably my favorite Johnny Cash song. I tried listening to the NIN version on YT, but the sound quality was so poor I didn't care for it. I don't know if that was intentional, but I even tried listening to a "remastered" version and it was still lousy.

The original LP or the CD version is way better for the NIN version. Most of those available on YT seems to be from the live shows. A decent one is from the 1995 show with David Bowie taking part in it.

Neither did I. I've heard it before but did not know it was by Hurt, who I had only heard of but not familiar with.
There are times however when well known musicians WILL improve a song but typically it's one that was originally performed by an unknown or low profile band or musician.
That's more than decent. Not only did I enjoy that, my wife was sitting on the other end of the couch and made the comment, "Who is that? I like that." and she is a country music fan - not much of a rocker.

I heard Hurt by NIN a couple of weeks ago. It didn't seen to have any emotion like Johnny brought out in that song. I like NIN, but in all honesty, Johnny kicked their bubblegum with their own song!

It's an acquired taste. My opinion, it's best heard at the end of the entire Downward Spiral album, from the beginning to the end, including that insanely measured track " March of the Pigs " at 296 beat per minutes
and a time measure of 29/8
