I have a Springfield XD 45 tactical (5") that I've put a nice 3.5# trigger and some TFO night sights on. I can shoot it pretty well even at 25 yards and with some gauging shots I can hit a milk jug at 100 yards. My only problem is its a large pistol which makes it harder to conceal but even harder to find a good holster for it.

Would I be nuts for trading it for a 45 acp service model?

I went the other direction.

1911s smaller than a government model are not as reliable as a full sized weapon, and a full sized weapon is just as easy to carry as a 3 inch model. The magic isn't in the length, it's in the width, and that is the same.

Good luck!

I had a 5" 1911 but now have a 3" version for several reasons.
Probably the biggest issue for me was driving.
I like how a high-ride holster keeps the pistol from binding when I'm in the car.
I also like how the shorter barrel does not project lower than my jacket.
If the 3" was not available for purchase then I would go with the commander size.
