Look on the manufactures web site. Most have a serial number look up page/link.

What do you mean "backstory"? Like how many crimes it has been used in?

Usually you can just call the manufacturer's customer service number and they can look it up for you.

What are you actually wanting to know....?
What make and model of firearm is it...?
Does it actually have a serial number...?
( Before 1968 , many firearms did not have one )

As noted above....many companies have information such as date of manufacture on their website or available via contact with them.
