The new cable TV drama series SHOOTER had its first episode last night. It will be on every Tuesday night on the USA Cable channel. The series is loosely based on the movie by the same name, but with a number of twists to the characters and the plot.

It goes into great detail on the guns being used. Stars Ryan Phillippe as Marine sniper and Iraq war hero Bob Lee Swagger. He is a pretty good actor. Here is a photo of him with his 338 Lapua Magnum:

You don't have to have cable TV to watch this new drama series. All of the episodes can be watched online on your PC, if you have a decent Internet connection:

Unfortunately the movie was a wildly modified version of Stephen Hunter's point of impact. The main character, Bob Lee Swagger, in the book was a sniper who served in Viet Nam and was loosely based on Carlos Hathcock and a couple of other snipers of note in the era. In one of the books of the series he does mention Hathcock by name to differentiate the character even though some of the situations Bob Lee Swagger was credited with in the books mirror the real life actions of Hathcock.
That said, the movie was still a far better interpretation of the book than Cussler's "Sahara" - that movie was a total flop for anyone who read the book.
Even "Jack Reacher" was better done than Sahara, though Tom Cruise is far from ideal to play Reacher as he isn't even close to the 6'5" height of the character.
