So, with all the happy horse hockey that Salem seems intent upon producing, we have been, in recent years, considering long term planning that involves leaving the state. We have pretty deep roots in Oregon and have no intention on bailing soon. And if we did, we might retain property here.

Our first inclination is western Idaho. It is beautiful country, parts of it remind me of Eastern Oregon, the state is pro-RKBA. The taxes are at least better than the endless parade of tax bullplop in this state.

That said, another I am looking into quite a bit is northwestern Nevada. Some pros:

  • No income tax.
  • A reasonable sales tax in most places, though others (like Clark County) it is much higher.
  • It is warm and dry, rather than months upon months of rain.
  • Land prices in the rural areas I've been looking at aren't bad.
  • It appears to be generally pro-freedom. Politically, we are small "l" libertarians, and have no use for nanny-state nonsense.
  • The laws seem pro-RKBA.
    • CCW (CFP as it is called there) is shall-issue.
    • NFA items are legal to own.
    • Open carry is legal.
    • Coyote hunting is legal even without a hunting license.
  • The state appears to be, generally, pro-business. I've read some companies have fled the Socialist Paradise of Cali for said.
  • The Mrs has good friends there, though they are further south in Henderson.
I enjoy a little gambling, but legal gaming isn't a huge concern. And if the touristas want to pay the taxes, even better.

Anyway, anyone considered the Silver State? Any pros or cons come to mind? Thanks.

What part are you considering. Northern (Reno) or southern (Vegas)?

They are both completely different animals.

I lived in Carson City/Minden and worked in Dayton for a year in 2012 prior to moving here.
My BIL has lived there for 20+ years.
I loved it. At the time, the gun laws were even better than now - Private Party Transfers were legal.
They did pass a UBC law, but the Governor or AG (can'r recall which) is not enforcing it.
It used to seriously P*** me off that I had to stop at the border before going into CA to unload and lock all weapons up.
No state income tax was very nice (made a BIG difference on paychecks).
24 hour liquor and gambling EVERYWHERE - bars, restaurants, 7-11's, grocery stores, etc - LOTS of DUI's.
Legal prostitution - used to drive past several "houses" on my way to work - no I never stopped tat any of them.
They STRONGLY enforce speed limits and even conduct "Pedestrian Stings" for failing to yield to pedestrians (even in pretty rural areas.
Really good deals on eating out - I think from the Casino competition.
People are generally very nice, but LOTS of Californians are moving there.
i'd definitely consider moving back if the right opportunity were to come up.

Oh - and Lake Tahoe was 20 minutes from home.

Northern. Washoe, Humboldt, and Pershing counties (and thereabouts). I have no interest in living near a large city in any state.

Thanks for the excellent write up. I appreciate the information. :)

As a former reserve deputy for Washoe county, my vote is north of Reno!

I miss the hunting and fishing, and the Hastey team, along with the Sar units I worked with.

To many ex wife's there.... LOL
So me and My Gal are heading to Idaho!

Ok. Good. I'd say stay away from Vegas. Like OR has Portland, Vegas is the epicenter for liberals vs the northern areas, even though Carson City being up north.

Humbolt county is a great area, as is Pershing county. Great desert like areas with lots of available BLM lands everywhere. Cute towns with good people in both. Winnemucca is a pretty cool place though right on the freeway. Gerlach and McDermitt are also really nice towns.

I lived in Sparks all of my life, recent trans to OR four years ago.

It is very hard to gauge how Nevada's future is to be. It is slowly following the footsteps of California like OR is. But, I did feel that the second amendment was much more stronger living there than here in OR. I think because all the desert creates the sense of isolation from big city's. Even Reno felt fairly small hence it's Nick name, the Biggest Little City. That and the smaller overall population, Reno and Vegas really being a huge portion of the state's population, there isn't much for liberal's to infect.

If you're sick of green and want brown and grey this area is for you! Also those areas do get cold during the winter, as well as quite a bit of snow. It is a dry cold, but you're up a few thousand feet with little to never cloud coverage. Even in the summer it can drop below freezing at night. So don't think it will just be warm all the time, or dry, think snow in feet not in inches like Portland does once every four years.

Drivers are mixed, they know how to yield for one, speed limits are generally faster, and you get some crazy Californians mixed in. But at least most freeways are 65.

I'd say Oregon areas are more hospitable than anywhere I've been in Nevada. Generally most people up here are nice, minus the Californians. Down there, people tend to stick to there own, even in the rural areas. However rural takes pretty good care of rural.

Your two picks are close to Black Rock Desert, look up burning man, consider this when deciding an area close to that area. Google it if you don't already know.

Water rights laws are different county to county, do your homework when looking art a plot of land. You may not be able to drill for a well on your own land in some areas.

Food "HAS" to be shipped in, this may not be an issue, but something I love about Oregon compared to Northern Nevada area. Everything grows here, not much does there. Though if you end up near Winnemucca you will be up to your ears in onions. If you like certain foods or fresh foods, they kind of don't work well with the middle of nowhere nevada desert.

Industry is changing down there. Once were booming casinos and huge tourism based environment, is now industrial warehousing and logistic based minimal wages jobs. Mining is big, especially in the areas your looking at. Good wages, horrible working shifts. The smaller towns are either farming based, cattle based, mining based, or one industry based like Fernley and Amazon.

Hope this helps I could type up tons more.

@Reno911, thanks so much for all the details. That is exactly the kind of information I was looking for. :)
No problem!

Forgot to talk hunting.

If you do end up moving start putting in for Antelope tags immediately. It will take 2-4 years to get one, but they are some of the most tasty animals I've ever eaten. Especially alfalfa fed. Which is a lot of the farming in those two counties.

He is Right!
Huge mule deer, in the black rock.
I left in 95 and and Dam if I didn't my tag right where I wanted in the black rock . Found it in my mail that was forwarded.

The reno sparks blew up big time afterwards.
Use to be able run out to east sparks and shoot not no more.

The Western States Championship IPSC was a lot of fun. We put on some great matches though the years .... Western Nevada Bullet (now X treme bullet) was a great sponsor.

We lived in Spanish springs for 3 years. North of sparks a few miles. It's not bad. Pretty dry. Real dry. Dust storms. Reno has some white trash going on.
You should move to lovelock! Lol

I stumbled on this - the article is about taking in Nevada

Someone gets you declared incompetent and gets all your assets.

Williams has reviewed hundreds of cases involving Jared Shafer, who is considered the godfather of guardians in Nevada. In the records room of the courthouse, she was afraid to say Shafer's name out loud. In the course of his thirty-five-year career, Shafer has assumed control of more than three thousand wards and estates and trained a generation of guardians. In 1979, he became the county's public administrator, handling the estates of people who had no relatives in Nevada, as well as the public guardian, serving wards when no family members or private guardians were available. In 2003, he left government and founded his own private guardianship and fiduciary business; he transferred the number of his government-issued phone to himself.

How the Elderly Lose Their Rights

And, no surprise, the police refuse to help the relatives -- "civil", "not a police matter"

The department repeatedly told her that it was a civil issue, and refused to take a report.

I lived in Reno and would not consider it warm. HOT in the summer is a better description, and while dry, quite cold during the winter.

You better like the color brown because Nevada is so dry it turns green for about 2 weeks in the spring and then turns brown the rest of the year. The exception to that of course are the small areas where there are pine trees, which in my opinion are some of the most beautiful areas in the world. Tahoe is a great example. The mountains east of Elko around Ruby Valley are another.

If you decide to become a resident, you will have to pay a sales tax on the value of your Oregon vehicles. No sales tax is a bonus of course, but expect that cost when you move. (This may have changed since I lived there but something you should check on.)

I lived on the northwest side of Reno and could ride my mountain bike from the house up Peavine Mtn. There were herds of mule deer on that mountain within sight of the city, along with bobcats and cougar. And lots of rattlesnakes. Nevada is quite the sportsman paradise when you consider how few resident compete for the available tags/game.

Being on the verge of retirement, I'm considering a condo or duplex in or around Las Vegas for winter living. Not as warm as some Arizona sunbird locations, but no sales tax has a big allure. Six months and one day living there and then back to Oregon to enjoy our farm near Silverton during spring and summer.

There's warmer climate and then a there's Arizona. Yikes!

Oh, I like the heat, a lot. Had family down in the Tucson area for a while and liked the general area. And I've had enough rain to last me several lifetimes. (If it wasn't for the tax insanity and coming anti-2A BS, I'd likely looking at expansion in eastern Oregon; though likely at a lower elevation than where we used to live out there.)

Just read that both houses of government now have a majority of female legislators. i am not anti-women, but that depends on what color of hat they wear in parades. between the METOO movement, MDA and other fringe gun grabbers I have developed a negative feelng about future of 2nd amendmant issues. The casinos are pure liberal unionized and looks like the state is controlled from Vegas. Too similar to the Porland/I5 situation here in OR. Starting to think Utah.
