Forrest Gump's fictional Medal of Honor citation was loosely based on Sammy Davis's real one. He single handedly moved and engaged the enemy with a damaged 105 mm howitzer. Upon depleting the big guns ammo and hearing yelling from the other side of the river and realized that GIs had been cut off there. Despite the fact that he didn't know how to swim, he got in the water and paddled across on an air mattress from the American camp to recue 3 men, one thought to be dead. All while being severely wounded himself.
