  1. I agree to the classified rules and terms of service
Thanks for the comment. What are the markings that make you think it was loaned to the British?
The upside down month and year stamp is marked by Springfield "SA-1-42" (I think that's what it reads) and the other markings look to be British Proof Markings with a crown image on the barrel followed with 18 Tons. The rifle dates to late 1941 to early 1942 so I expect the barrel is probably original.

Could you possibly remove the stock and take photos of the OPROD, Trigger assembly, bolt and sides of the receiver? Make sure to have a clear view of the manufacture numbers.

Is the rifle import marked anywhere on the barrel?

@Nibbs and others know more than I do I am sure, but other pictures might help with the sale.

SN places it early in Feb 1942, which is well w/in the LEND LEASE TIME FRAME.
The Brit Proof markings are accepted as being correct for LEND LEASE, although Those particular markings indicate that it was passed thru the main warehouse involved in the program & those markings were done well after the close of WWII.

SN 469909 has marking S-A-12-41 [upside down] which is correct thru that period.
Bolt marking: RE5A is w/ in the period arena;

This is an approximation & "1st in, Last Out" of the bin of parts always is involved. :)
SABoltD28287-2SARE5AJuly/1941 to July/1941269787 - 296252

The stock has definitely been sanded & refinished, & Generally in the early War the blanks were Dark Walnut.
Butt Plate appears to be WWII.

Further disassembly & pics of the components would be Kool.. :) :)

This IS a Really nice rifle & Piece of Our History.... :) :) :)

Thanks for the info. I will remove the stock tomorrow and post those pictures to this thread. I appreciate the help

Here is a nice article on these Garands in case you want to know a little history about them.

https://www.americanrifleman.org/content/garands-in-the-king-s-service/
That one IS a good article.
One point that isn't covered enuf is that during the war many of these found their way into the
"Home Guard" & who knows where they moved to from the beginning thru the decade that followed before they went into the PROOF HOUSE MARKING program for return,
hence Not ALL were stamped in the Chamber area w/ OP Rod withdrawn.

I have seen Late '41 rifles w/ only the Proof markings on the Bbl in front of the Upper Hand Guard,
none in the chamber area, though very uncommon.
Even saw an International Harvester w/ them being marketed as a LL.

I have owned 5 over the years & have seen many more, & None had the red & black stripes left save 1.
And the Brits seemed hell bent on Grinding off the SA/GHS Cartouche..
Some LL weapons wound up w/ "NOT ENGLISH MADE" Stamped on them. :oops:

Go figure.
IIRC ONLY the Deutsch repaid any War Debt.

I have one that came from a US Marine Corps Sniper that immediately got an FFL after the war
& M1s were his Love. His son grew up in that environment.
From the son I got;
SA 543,XXX [3-4/42], Bbl: SA 3/42: TE:0.8, MW:0.8, Lend Lease marked on upper Bbl only, & Reparked:eek:

This came as a Barreled action w/ clip release & Original bolt. All of those parts have
ZERO IMPERFECTIONS, so another Go Figure as to why on the repark, though it Is Beautiful...

I don't see any import markings on the rifle. But then again I am not sure how those would differ from the manufacture markings. But I am uploading more pictures. Thank you for youths ongoing history lesson

Looking good...
-3 Uncut Op Rod w/ early riveted spring guide fork are Good signs of not being messed with, other than the stock being redone.
Does it still have the single slot gas cyl lock screw?

Agreed! The trigger housing, bolt and oprod may very well be correct. They all date in range of this serial # to possibly be original parts to this rifle.

NICE!!
