I'm guessing they pissed somebody off. When I was stationed at Camp Pendleton a guy tossed someones rifle out of an Amtrak that they had accidentally left behind. Guy with the missing rifle ended up getting busted a rank and losing out on his guaranteed promotion to Corporal under the 6-year contract thing they used to have.
 
When I went thru basic in the army the drill sargents would go around at night and swipe soldiers weapons to teach them a lesson. Boy did they go thru hell. I almost slept on mine.it was in the bag with me

Heh, on field exercises I would loop one end of the sling around my wrist.
 
Think of the grief the Army placed upon a Soldier who lost their rifle then ratchet that up an order of magnitude. Remember that one of the mainstay ethos of the Marines is that "every Marine is a rifleman first". Each Marine, regardless of MOS qualifies with the rifle at least annually … it's a very deeply ingrained element of the Marine Corps worldview.
