plenty of use (sporadically off & on) over the last couple decades: sounded different wacking with it today....not really disappointed....just rather surprised...

what's a better more modern product to replace the old darling?

My use is primarily pistol calibers; I've got a frame mount collet set up if needed (as on some 308 a few years ago); almost never reload 223.

Looks exactly like mine. Uum not broken of course. Whacked lots of bullets out with mine. It is years old now. I figure when it breaks I will just buy another one. Franklin makes good stuff in my experience.

So far the only use I've had for mine was when I found out how high you can boost chamber
pressure by seating bullets too deep.:eek::eek:

P.S. They don't work worth a dam pounded on a wooden bench.

Just buy a new one, I use an RCBS hammer. The collet style pullers are faster for large quantities but if you just have one to pull the hammer is better than setting up the collet.
