Whoa, looks like S&W just announced a 22 version of its popular carbine model.

I don't own any S&Ws, let alone S&W 22s, is there any reason I shouldn't pick one of these up? Yes, I know getting the first edition of a thing is never a good idea but it is a proven platform and I worry in time that I wouldn't be able to get the 20-round model in Oregon.

The centerfire FPC does nothing for me, nor does this new .22 version. Not an apples to apples comparison, but I really like my Modded 15-22. YMMV

My local gun store has the M&P 15-22 for sale at $449.00. The\y do come with 10 round mags. They have nice flip up sights. And magazi\nes are ple\n\tiful and usually 20 to 22 bucks each for the 25 round mags and 26 dollars for the short ten round magazines.

If it were me I would wait for reviews and also handle it in person. Some of these guns like the 15-22 feel like a cheap plastic toy. The only reason I keep it around is because it accepts a binary trigger. I have never shot or held the folding one obviously. But I would gather more info before jumping in. I can't recall the last time I shot the 15-22. It feels so cheap compared to other guns I hate even picking it up and handling it so it just sits.

Some incredibly good alternatives for about $500-$550 fyi, Stribog tr-22 and hk g36:

Hk 416 pistol and rifle is another good one. But it has less accuracy than the g36 due to pencil barrel. G36/hk416/beretta arx160/hammerli tac1 all use the same mag which are very high quality. $12 from beretta for 30 rounders.

I wouldn't mind a 15-22 since I already have 2 5.56 ARs so it'd be nice to save some money on ammo but still have a full rifle instead of a CMMG conversion kit or a full .22LR upper.

They, S&W, have a pistol version with brace and flip up sights. I might check into one of them. To me they are just fun toys. Inexpensive, and puts a smile on my face. Soda bottles and beer cans beware!
