Silencer education video

As part of my campaign to change WA State law to allow silencer use I am going to make a video to educate people on silencer use. As many people, gun owners and legislators included think silencers are illegal, it is important to correct their misconceptions. Washington State is the only one of the 37 states that allows silencer ownership but prohibits use. I plan to send DVD's to my legislators when it is finished. Hopefully this will convince them to let House bill 1604 go the House floor for a vote next session.

My video will mainly consist of speaking into the camera about silencer history and NFA law. I will also show some of the forms associated with registering them, basic construction and some footage of the difference between suppressed and unsuppressed shooting.

Great Idea, I tried to look at the script but looks like I have to be a member. Maybe I will join up, just have too many forums I'm already trying to keep up with. Not sure if you have it in your script or not but Europe is much more "progressive" (restrictive on guns) and yet it recognizes that hearing loss is a serious issue. In Finland silencers are not regulated at all and in England and France they are available with a permit and cheap ($30 and up). With the rural areas becoming popular and with more complaints about noise pollution near shooting ranges, it is time that silencers become as unrestricted as automobile mufflers.

I have helped campaign to try and get the laws changed over the last couple of years, but it usually doesn't get out of committee. Sen Hargrove has written a few bills trying to change the language.

I even talked to him about adding language that would only allow possession to those with CPL's that way you have had your background check and because the state doesn't know how to spend money introducing a bill that would have more people get their CPL's it would make some money. It might be the only way this gets to floor for a vote. I don't want to be taxed anymore than we already are but with the way this state is i'm not sure if it will ever go any where. I have yet to hear of any new bills this legislative session, but maybe next year?

The way it's currently written even law enforcement using a silencer is breaking the law but no one will bring that up or any attorney take that on.

I have not need for a silencer, but I will not stand in the way of a law abiding citizen owning one if all the legalities are met. Very informative. One suggestion the fellow shooting the 22 pistol in the purple and yellow jacket, I would reshoot that portion of the video and have him take his finger off the trigger when he is not aiming the firearm down range. Good video and I think your on the right track. Thanks

I just spent ten minutes in front of the camcorder and made some more footage. Keep in mind that this is just a rehearsal, hence the boring background, no shave, unwashed hair and stumbling dialog.

The entire video will be remade after I get a new camcorder. The voice-overs used when displaying the photos and forms were made with a cheap microphone, but they sound far better than the camcorder microphone. This should improve when I get the new camcorder with an external microphone.

The footage of my lathe are still photos I took of already completed parts from my 300 whisper can, the rifle is my 300 whisper Contender.

I want to include a bit about the ATF form 4, but will keep it very brief and reduce the time spent on the form 1. I need to set up a stand to hold my script in front of me so that my eyes remain towards the camera. I also need to run through the whole thing repeated so that I do not stumble over the words. I need to change the script so that I say suppressor instead of silencer and firearm instead of weapon.

Would using actual video of turning silencer parts be better? I can take better photos of the silencer parts and rifles for the video. Anyone have suggestions on what photos I should use when talking about Maxim's silencers? So far the suggestions by others on the internet have been very helpful. Thanks.

Cut the video time in 1/2 or add more info for that amount of time. I think you'll start to loose em at the end.

Also have the chick do all the talking and shooting

I think I am already speaking too fast. My voice is not as clear as I wished it was, so I need to speak even slower than I am in the video now. I can chop time from the shooting portion. I hope to have my niece do the majority of the shooting for the final cut, but she balked at pullling the trigger on the 338 RUM last time. She is a real beginner with firearms.

Ranb - just wanted to thank you for your efforts on this.

Politicians are used to watching Powerpoint presentations. Rather than doing a talking head type video, I'd encourage thinking about cutting between your shooting video and some slides with your main points, and doing a voiceover.

It would be really nice to compare firearms noise levels pre and post silencers with any OSHA standards on noise (see http://www.osha.gov/SLTC/noisehearingconservation/)

The more you can refer to State and Federal standards about noise control, and the damage of noise to hearing, the better chance you have of getting it past politicians with negative or neutral attitudes on guns.

I am making a few animations to show how a silencer works. I will also show how loud the sonic boom is when the bullet passes an observer downrange. I have re-written the script to have less of me on screen.
