Never been directed at me, but in pursuit of prey, have had a couple of knickers tightening events. The most recent was at Browns Point fishing for Pinks. The guy next to me had a fish he had within a foot of the shore when a sea lion charged into the shallow and tried to take it. It happened like a lightening bolt and, upon turning back (missed the fish), glanced the guy fishing on the other side. It spooked him so bad, he came out of the water and closed up shop for the day.

Had another similar case over in Olalla where one charged after something within 5 feet of me. Given how aggressive I've observed them, the population of pinniped's, humans and swimming dogs around Puget Sound area beaches... I'm amazed we've not had an incident.

Many years ago when I was young and fit I was a surfer. Used to surf with two brothers around the Monterey/Big Sur area of California. One time while surfing Point Sur, a sea lion attacked one of the brothers and chewed his leg up pretty bad. We carried him to our car about a mile away using our shirts and towels to help slow the bleeding. We got him to the hospital in time, but he was white as a sheet when we got him into the ER. About a year later we managed to talk the recovered brother into going back to Point Sur for some more waves. We were walking to the beach through a wooded area when the same brother was stung by a bee. He immediately went into anaphalactic (spelling) shock and by the time we got him to the hospital, he looked like the Pillsbury Dough Boy. He wouldn't surf the Point again. Ah for the good old days.

In Oregon you CAN use a less than leathal method to defend your boat, tackle and fish.

This includes the use of a wrist rocket. This was told to me directly by an OSP fish and game officer, as long as it's "less than leathal" after the shot were his words.

The problem is that it's hard, damned hard to pull back a slingshot, fight and net at the same time. Pays to have a partner when fishing any tidal water I guess.

This happened in sandy eggo? I call Ghey!!!
(it's a SEAL thing)
When I lived in OZ, the only nation to have lost an ex-PM to a Great White, I was living on Frazier Island. th?id=OIP.M82f6d4b390c4c1e66c2c94aee145869co0&pid=15.1&P=0&w=244&h=184.jpg Despite being fairly far north the island is not tropical per say but it is a surf fisherman's paradise. th?id=OIP.M19079bb437570fc634c7405ba7ab8229o0&pid=15.1&P=0&w=200&h=150.jpg There is one rocky point where the fishermen clean their catch and toss the guts into the pristine waters and the area has a large number of thresher sharks that have learned to come out of the water, jaws agape to get the offal. th?id=OIP.M9a9af57e2dc0de92ee7677178fbcaf95o0&pid=15.1&P=0&w=242&h=183.jpg
So there I was standing on this rock, in shower sandals, and a 9 foot shark comes outa no where and almost grabs my toe . th?id=OIP.M2d032b65fbfab31c7bdd4420a6fceb47o0&pid=15.1&P=0&w=283&h=160.jpg My big mistake was standing in the same spot, 3 inches above the water line trying to freeze frame the sharks using 50 speed film. Not 1 in 20 frames was worth keeping (camera shake)
anyway the place is loaded w/sharks of all sizes
