Savage 99 Disassembly

I've come into the possession of a Savage 99 in .308 that was manufactured in 1957 and it looks like it hasn't been cleaned since 1967. The action feels stiff and I'd like to strip the whole rifle down to Parade Rest and clean and oil it as required.

I've never taken down any kind of lever action before and I've heard that 99s can be problematic. Has anyone here taken one apart and reassembled it? Is this a job I should leave to a qualified Smith?

You can do it. I would recommend getting a disassembly manual. I do not remember needing any slave pins or anything too tricky in reassembling it.

Thanks MountainBear. I see that you can purchase a disassembly/reassembly DVD for the rifle so I reckon I'll put it on order while I continue with my Finnish M39 project.

I used this link when I took down a Savage 99 for the first tie. It helped considerably. The one I was working on looked like it hadn't been cleaned in a decade or two as well.
