That is correct, AK-47 style weapons can be repaired by amateur blacksmiths if necessary. Just be real careful, and you should have no problem.

I did mine in my office at my house this weekend with a hammer, punch, cordless drill and a Dremel tool. A can of semi-gloss black engine enamel is a good thing to have too. That's it. You can do it yourself easily.
