Apparently Luna 2 crashed on the Moon in 1959; in 1966 Luna 9 and 13 missions did their first soft landings and photographs of the Moon surface for the Soviets.. seems a fair number of probes have impacted the Moon and not just from US or USSR.. but also China, India, Israel and the Eurpoean Space Agency
