Willie Mays this week, Jerry West last week. They don't get much larger-than-life than those two. The term "legend" is often overused but applies to guys like Mays and West.

He was my favorite baseball player when I was a kid in the '60s - I kept my Boy's Life magazine cover (from around 1964-5) with his photo for years - wish I still had it.

Not only was he a phenomenal player, by all accounts, he was (unlike many pro athletes) an even better person.

Yeah, and we lost Jerry West last week as well. Who played when the NBA was really worth watching... Tried viewing the Celtics/Mavericks finals series this week, NBA has become to me (a lifelong basketball fan) virtually unwatchable. I'd rather was women's college basketball...

Won rookie of year in 1951 went to serve from 52-54! His last at bat in rookie season he had a standing ovation, crowd knew he was going to serve. Crazy to think how many more hrs he would have! 660 coulda challenged Ruth's record with those 2 yrs of prime missed. I didn't know any of this until today. I learned about him serving today! Pretty cool, I had no idea.
