I have a hundred primed cases on order and may have an opportunity to pick up some more used cases tomorrow. I will give it some more thought before doing the conversion but you know I will likely try it anyways. :)

Thanks everybody for the offers and advice.

I am not talking about the shoulder I am talking COAL 270 winchester 2.80" 30-06 is 2.484" according to Hornady reloading mnanual
I think you might have mixed up some numbers there, but I see that the case length on the 270 and 280 are the same and longer than the '06. I guess I'd never paid any attention to that. What @NeoBlackdog pointed out about the 30-03 is right, too. For reference, my 180gr Ballistic tip handloads (30-06) are 3.265 OAL. I think industry max OAL 3.340", but all of my rifles have run into the lands before they got that long!
Back to the context of the thread, in this instance having a slightly shorter neck wouldn't be much of an issue, unlike if the neck ran long for the chamber.

I was able to purchase some previously fired 270 cases today. The seller threw in a couple of dozen primed 30-06 cases that have been resized to 270. That will give me an opportunity to do some measurements and try chambering them in my 270 rifles. I have heard that if your rifle has a tight chamber, the neck thickness issue can be a more likely problem.

I couldn't stand letting freedom day pass without engaging in some reloading freedom. I grabbed a few different headstamps out of my pile of old 30-06 cases and lubed them up real good. I ran them through the 30-06 sizing die first and then ran them through the 270 sizing die. I ran them through the 270 die three times, turning the case about 90 degrees each time. On the 2nd trip through the 270 die, I let the case sit in the die for 10 seconds. They look good measurement wise. I don't see any signs of thick necks. I do not have a chamber gauge for 270 so I will have to break out the rifles to see if these cases will chamber.

I dug out my Savage 110 in 270, this morning. I chambered the 9 resized 30-06 cases and seven chambered with normal effort. Two took a little more effort. They were a Dominion case and a Military case.

I also resized the W W Super 270 case and attempted to chamber it. It seemed to drop in the chamber OK but when I tried to close the bolt, it did not want to close. I ran it through the sizer die a couple of more times and I was able to close the bolt on it but with more force than I would feel comfortable having to apply. I checked various measurements and they seem to be in line with others.

I resized a Remington 270 case and a Norma 270 case and they chambered fine.

Regardless of whether I am using 270 cases or converted 30-06 cases, I am going to chamber test each case before loading it.

I just finished test chambering the primed, converted 30-06 cases I received yesterday. There was a total of 47 cases. 41 chambered fine and the other six not so much.

I pulled out 50 of the 70 270 cases which I will probably resize today. I am not ready to load them up yet. I have a lot of slow powder that needs burning but can't decide which one to start with. I'm leaning towards IMR4831 or Winchester WMR, both of these are old powders.

I don't load a high volume of rifle rounds. Every single one gets run thru the mag and action, bolt closed, extracted.

I finished off resizing a couple of dozen 270 cases and reformed 11 more of the old 30-06 cases to 270. I chamber checked all of the cases in my Savage all were fine.

I received my 100ct batch of 270 brass today. I was hoping it would be Nosler brass as that was what was showing in ad photo but the description said mixed headstamps. It turned out to be all Barnes headstamp brass.

Edit: After looking at my photo, I noticed some Norma headstamps on a couple of cases so I guessed it really is mixed.

I don't know who makes the brass for Barnes but it looks to be decent brass. We'll see how long it last.

I went through them and found 23 Norma cases, 1 GFL case and the rest were Barnes. Norma cases are suppose to be pretty decent.
