Protonmail rocks! I've been using protonmail since the very beginning 2014, the only time I've ever had issues was when they had a very suffocated DDOS attack a few years ago.

You can either send email recipient a link to a secured message that requires a password to read or you can use pgp for messages going to email providers outside of protonmail. This may not be perfect but its better than clear text being sent...

Better yet, just don't say or send anything on the internets that you know the gov. can use against you.
