"...over six months, the conspiracy.. allegedly purchased nearly 300 firearms from dealers in and around Atlanta, and transported the firearms to Philadelphia for distribution and sale on the black market "

"ATF agents found multiple firearms found in Philadelphia as having been originally purchased in South Carolina, ... with short "time to crime" periods that indicated they may have been trafficked into the city, ..."

"11 people have been charged "with conspiracy to deal firearms without a license and to make a false statement to a federally licensed firearms dealer,"

"In a second indictment, three people were charged with conspiracy to deal firearms without a license and to make a false statement to a federally licensed firearms dealer. One individual in the second indictment was also charged with dealing firearms without a license."

"An indictment, information, or criminal complaint is an accusation. A defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty."

They had time to come up with a name, "iron pipeline," Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), but nary a mention of Ghost Guns.

Once again.. straw purchases are to blame.
Not upstanding FFL's, not the true law abiding gun community.. rather a criminal enterprise seeking to arm those that are barred from purchasing a firearm.

"Massive." I bet just a few of us here could scare up 300 firearms between us (all legally owned, of course).

Ever notice how when the feds make a bust and do the press release, all the arrestees get their street nicknames (monikers) include in quotes?

What goes unmentioned, always, in these cases is, that while quite a few of these guns do end up in the hands of criminals and gang-bangers, probably at least as many guns sold on the "black market" are bought by folks that can't legally buy guns (immigration status, prohibited persons, etc.) but buy guns for the same reason millions of other folks do: self-defense, defense of home and family, defense of businesses (very common in NYC) and are just as likely to be kept stored in the sock drawer, nightstand or under a shop counter just like so many of ours...

The implication in these cases is that ALL of these guns go to bad people who are doing to use them for bad things, that these guns will all become "murder weapons." But we've let the media and the government frame the "gun black market" in this way. As with everything, the truth is always somewhere in between...

If they want to reduce this type of crime, get rid of background laws. Get rid of laws preventing minors and felons from buying guns. This will eliminate 99% of "straw" purchases.

An interesting proposition. If they made using a firearm in the commission of a violent crime a capital offense, that would drop that type of violence as well.
