Ok, so when I bought my new RIA a couple weeks ago I used a CC that had no balance and I needed to use it on something to keep it active.

This was an online purchase through Bi Mart.

Ok, so the sale was approved but the balance NOT applied to my card for like 5 days. When it was finally applied I get an email a couple days later from Experian saying my 'credit score had dropped' . I checked it and it had in fact dropped 5 points. FWIW I am in the upper tier of credit score as well.

Maybe it was dropped because of a gun purchase?

More likely nothing to do with what you bought and just because you made an unusual for you purchase on a card that you hadn't used for a while. Probably some AI bot that flagged it as matching the pattern of someone using an 'for emergencies only' card. JMHO but I think if you wait a while, or maybe after you make a payment your score will go back up.

Yea, I kinda began to wonder what if it were denied - and I already had the gun in hand?

I of course would have taken care of it but with the talk about some gun purchases on CCs being denied it had me thinking....

Five points isn't much. I notice my wife's credit score only because it shows up every time her Discover bill comes in the mail. We do use our credit cards, but pay them off every month. Her credit score generally falls into the 800-814 range but does fluctuate a little bit monthly. Recently, she got a new Costco/VISA card, and her credit score fell all the way down to 794. Through our credit union we have account monitoring provided by a third party. That additional card was the only change in our records.

I wouldn't worry too much about five points.

As part of a data breach response to customers from a company that had my personal data on file, they offered a 1 year free credit score and dark web monitoring service. As part of that service, my credit score is monitored and I get email alerts if my score changes.

I was surprised to find that I get these email alerts about my credit score change quite often, probably one per week. I get alerts if my score goes up or down.

I've found that large credit card purchases will move my score down a couple of points, and that inactivity of my credit cards will result in my score moving back up a couple of points.

Just my 2-cents.

TWYLALTR

Cheers.

And so do I and I get alerts often as well, but this seemed coincidental due to the purchase - along with the purchase not immediately applied to the card balance.

I don't think it means anything. I get reports of tiny drops which happens frequently as we use cash back credit cards. Then pay them off and they go back up the same month. The fluctuations are normal imo and some of the credit reporting to you of drops is too sensitive imo.

If the card balance on the card was $0 when you got the updated credit score, then something else changed.

For the credit-scoring companies they are only really adjusting based on the recent, reported balance for each form of credit.

I have never known what our credit score is. Never cared. The one time we tried to find out about 20 years ago, (just for grins) the few places we had looked in to wanted money to give me the report. We said no. never tried again. couple times since then we were offered it for free, all we had to do was give them all our banking info. We don't know these people so that's not happening.
From what we have gleaned from others over the years, its most likely a pretty bad score, even though our house has been paid off since 91, We've never been delinquent on any utility or tax bill or anything else. We have one credit card only because many business wont do business without one, but have never once paid any interest. All our banking, including the credit card, goes through one credit union and they have done a good job over the last sixty years letting us know if anything weird is going on.
Because we have paid cash all our life, with a little money in the bank, were not fiscally responsible?

Discover Card give a credit score every month with the bill. A few months ago Discover contacted me via e-mail and told me I had fraudulent activity on my card. Laid it out for me, like 3-4 purchases for low amounts of $1.00-$10.00 triggered their security. I had a new card three days later. I use that card very little. Credit score normally high 7s to low 8s.

Shouldn't need to blink at a 5 point change, I would think?

Keep my score mediocre so my identity isn't worth stealing.
I rarely wash my truck, same reason.

Rodents and scavenger birds like shiny things.

We have a winner. Right down the line, 'cept my place ain't quite paid for yet, and it's the only money I owe to a soul.

Really? You think it dropped 5 points because of a gun purchase? Your card company has less than zero idea what you bought, only the amount. You are not sponsored by Alcoa, quit making hats

My Internet Guess is that it might have had something to do with Credit Utilization.
balances that exceed about 30% of your limit can also negatively affect your score

Before the store let you walk they had the money or you would not have walked. What it shows on line may take time but, the store got the OK or they would not let you out the door with the item. As to the points who knows. Mine and Wife's goes up and down by that much fairly regularly. I stopped paying much attention and would not bother unless I got a notice that there had been a large difference.
