I finally had my CHL appointment today. Took my Oregon/Utah class way back in April but was told by the Sherrifs Department that they would not accept any application until the actual appointment time. OK when is the next appointment? 20 weeks! So I have been patiently waiting for nearly five months. Got my Utah permit over 9 weeks ago and have been carrying in Washington, especially Spokane, but have to disarm at the border everytime. Heck if I go through Portland I have to take all of the rounds out of my magazines!

So I finally had my CHL appointment today. Course certificate, 2 picture IDs, birth certificate, application with "two character references" WTH? I thought Oregon was a Shall Issue State? Got finger printed, picture taken and wrote a check. Because of my unique name my 4473 checks come back clean in 30 seconds so I was hoping to get my CHL in hand within 30 days. The young lady tells me that they usually run 45 days, but because they have been so busy expect to wait 90 days. WTH again? I thought that Oregon State required that Sheriff offices process your application in 60 days? They already cheated by not accepting it for 140 days. Are they really unnecessarily calling two references for every applicant?

I am not naming the County until I have my permit in hand. Once that is complete who do I complain to?

Yourself?

Do you REALLY think anyone in the gov't cares?

ORS 166.292 says they have 45 days from the date of application if the application is accepted for those who are counting at home. ;)

Ouch!

Yourself?

Do you REALLY think anyone cares (besides you that is?).

Actually YES. I have read others ask about and post their CHL wait times for different counties here on NWF. None of the others have had a wait time even close to 7-8 months!

Wow- that sounds like a horrible experience. I got my chl through Washington county- I applied in late April and got my permit the day of my appointment (1st week of august). I was actually surprised the lady just printed it off and handed it to me after my pic/fingerprinting process.

Good deal. Did Washington County require the name, phone number and full addresses of two character references?

What county was this done in? I really need to get off my *** and get this done as well. Im down in Marion which I feel will have along wait time as well.

Ouch! That is outrageous. I live in Yamhill county and both my and my husbands came in the mail in less that a week after we filled out the applications. No appointments needed, you just go in and fill out the application on the days they are open to accept them. They didn't ask for any references, probably because they are honest enough to admit they don't have time to contact them anyway.

Apparently our county can only process 100 applications per month including out of state ones. Since $50 of the $65 Oregon CHL application fee goes to the local Sheriff, he finally got a clue two weeks ago and hired a new clerk as a one year temp. That extra $5000 per month could easily be doubled or even tripled, but he took the Sergeant who was processing the applications part time off of CHL so it is now all resting on the new gal with two weeks of training. Maybe she can get up to 150 applications per month.

Interesting. In Clackamas county, I submitted the application on line, had my appointment 30 days later, picture taken, finger prints run, and got my license right then. They told me they
did the background check during the time between my submitting the application on line and the appointment date.

Could not have been more pleased.

Good to know.
