One of my friends is a kokanee legend celebrity on a certain lake here. He gets a lot of angry and bitter posts and accusations of illegal fishing, especially when he catches over 100. Some claim he is over the limit and complain to the game wardens, but there is no limit. A game warden stopped by on Saturday, knows him by name. My friend is 100% legit. He is that good, and those that aren't are suspicious as hell just because they can't match that.

He is also a trophy elk bow hunter, with a sponsorship. Very fun and nice guy with lots of 320+ class elk under his belt. Public land. We will be competing against each other for muleys next year in rifle season for a case of beer, since that is my favorite species to hunt. Most of my new friends out here are hardcore hunters and/or fisherman.
That's funny about the kokanee. My buddy that I helped pack out his big bulls is also a kokanee slayer. The way he talks about fishing for kokanee, he makes it sound more like hunting - spot and stalk. He probably has a half dozen 300+" European mounts in the rafters of his garage. He generally will take the first decent bull he finds and doesn't really care about scores that much. That's a good attitude to have in Oregon when you're hunting OTC or high draw odds units.

I don't do much fishing these days. My wife's stepdad got me into fly fishing when I was younger, but I haven't gone much since he passed away. My son drags me out now and then. In recent years we have become a little less hardcore on the hunting, learning to stop and smell the roses a bit more. I'm getting older. There are times I'm almost relieved when I crawl up out of a canyon in the dark with my headlamp, that I didn't arrow a bull in the bottom. :D

I sure wish the hunter would post his side of what went on, because he's not getting the benefit of the doubt from the locals in Washington where the bull was taken.
Like I wrote earlier, I've only met him a couple times. Seems like a pretty stand up guy. That said, he also doesn't seem like the kind of guy to worry much about what the riff-raff think of him.
The bull has his tag on it and he spent a lot of money, time and effort to make it so.
If he takes it to his regular taxidermist, I'll get an up close look and maybe more of the story.

New video has come to light showing this bull in the local neighborhoods backyard.

Seems that this animal was known to the locals who of course didn't have any intent to hunt and take it as a trophy.

Video shows from a backyard this elk (clear from the left rear main beam) walking through a backyard at night in 12/14/24 under some string lights.

While he did kill it, did he really put in the time like the fable makes it out to be?

Seems the locals named it.

Fact may be more mysterious than fiction.

I don't give a flying bubblegum either way but at least be truthful when you pop a neighborhood visitor.

Now it's "Bernard".

That is now the third name that I have seen posted on social media attributed to this bull. The other two names are "Chico" and "Atlas". I have also seen numerous posts claiming this bull was "hand fed" but apparently no one thought to pull a cell phone out of their pocket and take a photo of the WORLD CLASS bull being "hand fed" by local residents. Very strange in this day of social media dominance.

Most of the negative social media postings surrounding this bull have all originated from one single individual who is a member of the Yakama tribe, who himself has a great many controversies surrounding him over his own take of bulls in various off-limit to the general public areas of Washington. I get the feeling that there is more to his story than what he is volunteering. Perhaps he had his eyes on this bull and white guy Mr. Brooks with his many $$$$ beat him to the punch. Who knows.

My suspicion is that when this all washes out, it will be a very mundane story of a bull who was simply shot on private ground. All the fake and manufactured outrage will be just that and nothing more than social media band wagon virtue signaling.
