Hello everyone,

I'm headed into my CHL interview on Monday in Lane County. What should I be expecting? Casual interview, trick questions or just showing information and doing prints.... and photos....?

Thanks!

I personally have not heard of an actual interview for a CHL, but I haven't needed a CHL in over twenty years.

My wife did not get interviewed when she received her CHL, it was just an appointment to go over her paperwork. We reside in a slightly more conservative county than Lane County.

If in fact it is a real interview be honest.

No question about being honest. I reviewed the on line CC course again. A few of those questions suffer from poor wording all the while referring you to the statutes. Just a curiosity.

Expect trick questions. Here are a couple:
Do you have state issued ID that has your current correct name and address?
Do you have the course completion certificate from your CHL course?
Did you bring your own completed fingerprint card or EFT file, or would you like for us to take your prints?
Can you fill out our form that is similar to the ATF 4473?

Other than that the "interview" isn't too hard.

Well, it was a nothing burger. Showed two forms of ID AND had to show a credit card! Presented my app and certificate.

Was called back quickly for picture and payment then prints.

Clerk told me to expect my card within a week or so.

Super friendly staff, despite the "gatekeeper" trying to be gruff for all the people sitting in the waiting room.

Whole thing was less than 15 minutes.

I have to admit that the request for a credit card threw me.....as in , "you want to see a credit card...."? My wife suggested I just say I didn't have one, but I showed it. I guess they want to see that everything in your wallet matches....

credit card can be used as some sort of ID, I would care less if they asked me.
I've been asked to see my driver's license to verify my credit card, but never been asked for a credit card as any kind of ID. Just saying that it seemed odd, considering they are asking for a current DL, Passport or Birth Certificate. Two of which have photo ID.

I got my CHL in Lane County and have renewed it a few times. It's not like you feel it's enemy territory. The folks I dealt with were always casual and cordial. It seems like there was one fella there who worked there for many years. I don't even recall what I would consider an interview. More like, "Do you have the required paperwork as listed in the instructions?" As the OP stated, a nothing burger.

In WA county, no interview for CHL. However years back an interview was required for the Sheriff's sign off on the ATF forms for a suppressor. I did not know what to expect. Met with an Lt. Black. He rubber stamped the forms and commented, 'nice can, what are you hosting it on?' I replied, HK USP 9SD. He said good choice, handed me my approved forms, shook my hand and said 'see you next time.' Pretty nice guy.
I was told that the interview was because they wanted to eyeball you incase you were a total nut job.

I have yet to go down and renew my CHL. I called them and I need to make an appointment to do my paperwork and photograph. LCSO.
It has been a while, but when I renewed, they were scheduled several months out. I made an appointment online, showed up a little ahead of time and they got me right in at the exact time. It went really quickly. I think I printed the forms out from their website and had everything ready to go when I got there.

Yes, having the paperwork completed and all details that were required for my application made it smooth. And they do seem to be pretty serious about holding things on time if you have an appointment.

I got my first CHL in Lane county. That was about 93 or 94. The required course was a 2 day course with one day in class and the second day on the range. Had a great instructor. Back then online anything hadn't been invented yet. I still think in person classes should be required. At least someone verifies the person isn't a complete cheese head when it comes to firearms.

Renewals in Deschutes County takes about 5 minutes. Stamp the form, pay the fee and get a picture. ...actually I just looked, my current picture is 12 years old. I don't even get a new picture.

Agreed on the in person class.

I don't know guys. There is no denying there are plenty of morons running around. But what's to stop them from carrying concealed without a license? There are states where free folks don't have to have a permit to carry. I like that idea. I would never vote to put more restrictions on law abiding folks.
