Take a trip to OFA or FAS they are relatively close to you.

There are several 'new time buyer' threads on this forum. Try to look them up. There are is a lot of good information out there and things to think about and consider.

Short story, get as much training as you can pay for. Try several handguns at a range (or two) where you can rent them before you buy.
