I have a 1969 winchester model 94 golden spike bicentennial. It was a gift from my grandpa and the gold appears to be tarnished. The rifle is very well kept and I am thinking what looks like tarnish is actually just old gun oil. I am scared to try to polish it with a compound for fear the gold will flake any tips on how to clean it.

I second the denatured alcohol, or straight acetone. Use a very soft cloth! WD40 leaves a heck of a mess when it dries and gets old...looks like tarnish

I would not use any kind of polish, cuz once its scratched your hosed..so be careful.
