I have a model 94 that I need to take a part and clean, the barrel says that it has a nickel steel barrel. Are there any modern cleaning solutions I should avoid?

General consensus is to avoid using Hoppes 9 solvent on Nickel Plated firearms; not sure if that applies to a barrel that is a nickel/steel alloy though!

I have one of its 1898 brothers. NiFe (Nickel Steel) simply means iron that has been alloyed with nickel for the sake of durability and pressure resistance. A pure iron barrel might soon shatter into shrapnel due to iron's relative brittleness. What you might want to avoid is a lead wipe away cloth - those damage or remove bluing.

Hoppe's is a fine, if decidedly vintage solvent.
