Hitting steel at 300 yards has been something I've wanted to do for a while. I couldn't do it with my AK or my lever action rifle. I finally scoped my Ruger Mini 14 and bingo! No problem. Mini 14 580 series accuracy is not so bad after all. I thought I was going to have to buy a bolt gun or an AR but the Mini 14 came through :)

I salute you!

Mine does pretty good at the farthest I've tried, 250 yards. I've never mentioned it before due to the... well, never mind, you'll eventually see for yourself.

Yeah, I get it. The Mini 14 has a reputation for poor accuracy. But the newer ones are pretty decent. They are good enough for home defense or defending your property out to 300 yards at least, and that's a pretty fair distance. So to anyone who wants a Mini 14 and can tolerate a little teasing, I say go for it!

That's awesome! nothing like ringing steel at 300!
Mini-14s get a bad rap for accuracy, but a good scope and the 580 series barrels can really surprise people.

one can do that on a 6' steel plate with a 100 yr old $180 scoped Mosin PEM, with Wolf ammo

but if you can do that with a Mini 14, congratulations

I was just teasing you. Mini 14's are a lot of fun. My late buddy had one and we shared fond memories of ground squirrels on a ranch near Oregon. For some reason, he always wanted me to shoot his Mini while he watched with binoculars, probably because I had a tendency to put the "auto" into semi auto. He would laugh so hard at the panicked squirrels while the dirt and rocks flew all around them that he would lose sight in the binocs. Occasionally one would run into a random bullet…
Good times, I miss my buddy. :s0003:

The Mini for a LONG time had real problems with drift. Trying to zero one was often VERY frustrating as the POI kept moving. For a LONG time Ruger tried to figure out what was going wrong. They finally did move a LOT in the right direction. By then the problem was cost. Back when I was playing with Mini's it was due to them selling for half the cost of AR's. Later it got to where you could buy 3 AR's for the cost of one Mini and the Mini was still poor in accuracy. They always were a neat little rifle and glad they finally got the design to work better. Even with the problems and price the market has always been there as anyone who wants to buy one can see. They are not giving them away. :D

The haters are keeping prices low while fussing over various malfunctions or accessory incompatibility in their ARs. And, what did the Mini ever claim to be?
EDIT: Sticker shock. Last Mini I bought was in the $200 range, if that tells you anything. Currently, they are about $200 more than a genuine Colt AR. I do not know how accurate the Colts are.
