At what point do we consider the destruction of livelihood a threat to well being? I get what you are saying with regards to current social and legal precedent, but we must also remember that if you do not have the right to defend something you do not actually own that thing. This extends to stuff as much as it applies to our own lives. Sure, the complete loss of livelihood might not be life ending, but it can certainly be hugely and negatively life altering. When do we as a society agree that that too is something worth defending?Cash register, ATM, and some goods in a convenience store aren't worth me going to jail and facing a long costly trial. Pepper spray might be fun, but you had better know what the ventilation is going to blow back into your own face.
If you're outnumbered, or for that matter, in a fair fight, you probably chose poorly. Never aggravate a situation you know you can't win. Sometimes it's best to let the idiots do idiot things, and just walk away.
I certainly think that livelihood is worth defending, and vigorously so. It seems a significant, if quiet, portion of society thinks the same. The only question is getting the courts to agree. That is a more difficult task, but I think that doing so would benefit our society a great deal.
