Interesting article. Short version, a rancher in MT was trying to create the biggest sheep he could, so he managed to clone embryos from an endangered mountain sheep species, raise the clone, then had it mate with ewes in his herd to produce giant hybrid offspring. The illegal part was trafficking in parts of an endangered species, though there were also concerns as to how his actions could threaten Montana's native wildlife species.

Watch China start making clones of these sheep for meats since they now know its possible. And all these laws have not really stopped criminal enterprises from trafficking endangered wildlife parts or whole animals wherever

Scientists were shocked this guy was able to successfully do that. With no formal genetic training. And they will be stealing, er, I mean studying, his techniques very closely.

But hey, Montanans REALLY love their sheep. And he made more of one to love. Is what he did really that baa-a-a-d? Stop being so zoophobic, bigot.

A BS case.
Zoos alone do significantly more damage to wildlife than Mr Schubarth could in three lifetimes.
I stopped giving to WWF 30 years ago after seeing what a scam that organization is.

The SHEAR frustration that rancher must be going through right now... He couldn't pull the wool over their eyes, and got caught.

I remember years ago discussing the legality's of making a mid block "U" turn when Arnie who had come in mid conversation spoke up saying "make a eww turn? Hell I can make her eyes bug out". I later found out he was from rural Montana. :s0001:

Oh, yeah. The button fly was invented here, because a sheep can hear a zipper a field away.

Montana, where the men are men and the sheep are nervous.

Folks have been genetically altering wildlife for domestic use for millennia, Albeit through breeding not cloning, Though anyone remember Dolly, Ok, not from an endangered critter but plenty of self righteous have been messing with many so called endangered like the California condor by sucking up their eggs or trapping for breeding.
Many things like this are touted as protecting the endangered, but behind the scene also are just as likely to be because he pissed someone off by not getting permission and or pay for permits.

He got arrested because he did it. He only got 6 months because he's a boss.

Ya, I remember Dolly. First time I saw her in person she was headed up to Rupert's Regency club in Westwood. While I am well aware she was altered I thought the alteration was done surgically not genetically.

You must be thinking of another dolly, dolly the sheep, first successfully cloned mammal ever, (not genetically altered) in the 90,s & lived long in scotland where cloned

Always heard that was Wyoming? And something about putting that ewe facing the edge of a wash for better action.
They all give each other a hard time in that part of the country. Dad was from North Dakota and Mom was from Montana. One of mom's brothers wound up marrying one of Dad's sisters, so each state was well represented at family gatherings.

The Montana contingent had an unlimited number of North Dakota jokes and vice-versa. Sheep were heavily featured in Montana digs and the North Dakota jokes tended to feature big dumb Scandinavians.

Everybody drank, everybody laughed and sometimes even switched sides in the joke telling. I think people who have big families and do a lot of hard manual labor in the outside know how to have fun and don't take things too seriously.

All that guy had to do was say he's cloning Democrats, and they would have left him alone.
