This one's hanging on a "bear wall" in my house, under a bear head and next to a bearometer.

Ive always wondered how well those thin silver mylar survival blankets work but don't want to find out.
They work. I've used them more than once, though the ones you get on Amazon kinda suck. Before mylar was commonplace, the bags I had were the hypothermia bags for lifeboats, which ships are required to replace every few years. I had a bunch of the cast-offs.
backpack, which is loaded with a few things. Extra gloves, map, bigger flashlight, fire starter, mylar blanket, GPS and spare batteries. Nothing but the GPS ever leaves that pack.
No FAK???

At a minimum, get onx.
I had OnX for a few years, now use Basemap, like it more (plus it's much cheaper).
They have an analog version of that, too. I think it's called... A map
The ranger and forest service offices are often the place for the best maps of where you'll be. Unfortunately many are not waxed. I'd never trade my map of the Tillamook forest for any GPS on a phone.

Youd be surprised how many people can't read a map.....
In college, a close friend was teaching a geography class. A quiz on the first day was to get an idea of who even knew the US and identify the states. Only one student could, and less than half could identify more than 20 states. I suspect it's even worse now.

I have one of the last copies of the official TSF map, it baffles me why it went out of production and so far there is no printed alternative thats worth relying on.
However, the free Caltopo map layer on their GPS phone app is accurate and all I use now to navigate out there.

Yeah, mine is pretty tattered from ~15 years of regular use.

No compass? No map?
I recall having a map with 'markings' on it where camp was but no compass.

I normally cross refer landmarks on the map I can recognize but I simply overlooked some of the ''basics' and wandered into unfamiliar area.

I also made the mistake of wandering onto a canyon and could not see out.

However along the way I had a couple interesting experiences. I saw a grove of Aspen trees and walked into them and noticed what looked like carvings on them and looking closer I could make out initials and dates from the late 1800s, early 1900s.

Upon coming up out of a canyon I walked into a clearing and was suddenly surrounded by MANY bulls (not elk) ! Well, they looked pretty content so I backed up and went back down in the canyon and walked a short distance to get away from them.

I can see why they may have driven by and waved. It's elk season! I've seen a lot of people out with a rifle at first light and thought nothing of it. I had a guy wave at me one time on a road and I just about drove by him but it turns out he'd been out all night with just a flannel shirt and an empty 300 weatherby in a foot of snow. It happens but I still don't automatically think lost hunter as many like to be out before sunrise. I've also gotta comment that their are a lot of paranoid people on here! Most people are good and have good intentions, even some democrats!

question is why would anybody driving the mountain roads in winter conditions not stop and ask a person sitting off the road if they were OK. no vehicle in sight & obvious foot tracks
A person in that situation, not asking for help, but merely thinking they want help, is a doofus, and an obvious danger to themselves and others.

What's the pound sign for?
It's what they were using on Twitter a few years back when everybody was claiming rape. It means "pound me too", except the pound sign is for Twitter or something. I don't know; kids these days.

the # pound sign attached to words or phrases becomes a searchable link across social media platforms....
