Just picked up a Magpul hunter stock for my rem 700. I put some dykem on the front and rear area where the receiver contacts the stock bedding block. Since my recoil lug is removed I was able to work the receiver front and back to see how it contacts. What I found is it only contacted two small spots behind the front mounting screw and two small spots in front of the rear mounting screw, meaning there would be a bunch of stress on the receiver. As an alternative to bedding I decided to lap the contact points. I added a small amount of lapping compound to the bedding block and worked the receiver back and forth until I got full contact while checking with the mapping fluid. This would likely work on any stock with a bedding block, though I haven't worked up the courage to try this with my manners stocks....
