Most ranges only allow shoulder fired weapons to be bench fired, while some ranges allow shoulder firing while standing with and additional "safety training endorsement" (for lack of a better term). So if you're at the "pistol range" and you shoulder an AR "pistol" I could see a potential run-in with an RO on a "technicality".
