Update.

Called the shop today and know these things. Price is $600 firm , 6" blued marked k22 combat masterpiece. Serial number unknown, but I can look it up at the counter I'm sure.

Assuming +/- %90 finish. Any way to discern pre 17 , 17 , 18 by serial or identifying features?
...four years later...
Did it look like this?

That would make it a K-22 Masterpiece. The Model 17 under its prior name. Probably dates from WWII or maybe even the 1930's.
Did Knobgoblin ever buy it?
Never mind, I found the other 3 pages to this thread and read through it. Sorry you missed out Knobgoblin.

We're in the same boat on opposites sides, I need a nice Mod 15
I once had a Combat Masterpiece that was a pre model number. It was like new and I shot it very little because it was so nice. It got traded away when I was raising cash for another project.
The one I'm keeping an eye out for is a 4" Model 65. I had one in the mid 80's and wish I'da kept it. Or at least NOW I wish I'da kept it! :s0114:

I got one of the k-22 masterpiece ones. Nice balance and doesn't appear to have been fired much. I'm not sure I'll ever shoot though cuz I only shoot .22 suppressed.
