I have a barrel that Alex took off of my Ruger. Unlike your barrel, @Koda , mine is only worth anything as a tent stake, but I kept it anyway. (probably more to remind me what not to do) Also, as Alex mentioned, I'm sure this one could be set back a turn or two and the chamber recut. Probably only a cost effective option to a gunsmith.
I may end up cutting mine into lengths, as needed, for spacers.

I have no way of knowing for sure, but heres my take based only on my own experience. I still think the barrel could be used on a spare parts rebuild gun. I remember getting an average of 1.5moa in its current condition but only with Hornady factory ammo, some groups would be under 1moa but there was always occasional flilers way out that bothered me. Other brands of ammo would be horrible groups. I chased my tail a bit learning all this and decided to replace the barrel back then because I learned I had a horrible carbon ring I could not scrub out, the crown is dinged. The pitting in the lands, IMO were fine if kept fouled the lead filled the holes Im guessing. I think the chamber could be recut, recrowned, and set back on an old spare parts gun would bring such a gun back to life. Way out of my capabilities of course and what are the odds anyone has all the spare parts.

@P7M13, @Vernonia MW , @RVTECH, @lucusloc if anyone wants it can come get it for free. In full disclosure I cant really drive anywhere far to meet up as Im scrambling to sell and move asap due to lifes crazyness, I wont get to hunt this year and feel like im working 2 jobs to clear out the house right now. My preference would be this go on a spare parts gun, give it to some young person who cant afford a hunting rifle but wants to hunt but I just know I dont have the skills to ever bring it back to life so it needs to go. Send me a PM if interested in getting it. Note, I'll let it linger a bit longer but at some point I will throw it out.

I am heading up Portland way in the next few weeks, if I remember correctly you are located somewhere up north thereabout.

I probably would not turn it into a functional rifle though, so if you have your heart set on that I would have to decline. I do want to put together a barrel lathe at some point, something I can bore and cut rifling, and I even have some parts I collected to start that project, but if we are being honest with ourselves that is probably an after retirement project. I still have quite a few years to go on that.

At this point in time it would go into the scrap pile to be turned into blades or little metal parts for something, and I am not even sure how fast that would happen as I do have a pretty decent pile of scrap. But us scavenger machinists and forgers never turn down good scrap, and barrel steel is great quality stuff that can be used for all kinds of things. It is incredibly tough, so use as a knife spine, axe head or machine parts are ideal. I already have one other barrel in the scrap pile from a gun destroyed in a fire. That destroyed the temper and made it unsafe to shoot, but the steel is still good.

@P7M13 anytime you are in the area and have some free time hit me up. I cannot guarantee I will be free, what with job and family and everything, but I do try to make time for socializing when I can. I wont know if I have free time until someone asks :s0140:

Im a little bit of a nerd, and keep a file on each gun. here is a photo record of the barrel when it was removed...

The crown ding:

The lands pitting, this is typical all up and down...:

Now for some of the last targets I shot with it. Some grouped very well, other brands did not:
Hornady 8144 shot consistently well, though most groups averaged 1.5moa....

A typical group size at 100yds with Hornady 8144 American Whitetail, 117gn Interlock:

Looks like @Koda is tryin to talk himself out of getting rid of it! :s0112:
If we coulda saved my barrel, I would have gone that route. This one could be salvaged, I believe.
But I ain't gonna build a 700 just to put it to use. Now, if it was a 600...

No I promise :p it would be a fun hobby but I dont have the space or money to learn to rebuild rifles. Last I checked even used Remington 700 actions were selling for some good money too, worthy of new barrels.

I've seen worse. I'd think it has some value to someone who wants to save a beater rifle with a worse barrel. If you have an ebay account, you might consider putting it up there. People will buy all kinds of stuff even well worn.
