I replaced the barrel with a new one and have the old one laying around.
Its an original factory Remington 700 barrel, 24in, 25-06 cal, 24in, tapped for iron sights.
Its about roughly 20-30 years old. The chamber has a horrible carbon ring. The throat is firecracked. The lands are pitted. I took several deer, elk, and pronghorn with it over the years.
I'll never use it again, it needs to go.

Is this worth anything? Anything a smith or hobbyist can clean up and use? Or just toss it?

It doesnt sound like its worth anything. Just feels kinda odd tossing it after all the years of use but it needed to be replaced.
@Vernonia MW is there any use in old barrels or is it finally dead?

Could be rebored.

Could be used for something else where a strong steel tube would be useful (jack handle, etc.)

Cut into short sections to make spacers for something.

Cut very much shorter to make 1/4 inch flat washers. :D

I don't throw them away. They make good practice stubs for checking a tenon you are unfamiliar with, or testing a new chamber reamer. Just being a long piece of steel can sometimes have its utility as well.

I've gotten $20 for burned up barrels before. Some people take them and turn them into muzzle brakes. Its days as a barrel are likely over unless you find a retired smith with more time than money. It could potentially be set back a thread, the chamber recut, an inch removed from the muzzle and crowned. Or as DirectDrive mentioned, it could be rebored. Not really worth doing unless there is sentimental value, in my opinion.

@Vernonia MW thank you. It sounds like its not worth me keeping, Lots of memories with the rifle, but the barrel is no longer part of the rifle so there isnt enough sentimental value in the old barrel. I'll just toss it in the trash.

Do you know or know of a metal worker....
Have him take a section and make a ring or pendant out the barrel.
Might make for neat keepsake for an old rifle barrel that earned its keep.

I dont. Im not a jewerly person but that is a beautiful idea...
Im ok with letting it go, I just wasnt certain if it still had any life left in it so it seemed odd throwing it away without asking here. It served its purpose, the rest of the rifle rebuild I intentionally left original to preserve the history and appearance of the rifle. I even insisted on blued steel barrel to go with the original factory walnut stock.

I'd make that ring out of a part of it for you if you were closer!

I once machined a ring for my daughter out of a piece of titanium tubing.
I used to love visiting the Bend area many years ago, lots of outdoors out that way. The way Portland has turned out I wish I had moved there back then.

Barrel steel would likely make a poor choice for jewelry. Even stainless barrels are 400 series and will rust. Perhaps if it was plated? Even then, I wouldn't bother. Jewelry is a weird thing. It is in constant close contact with your skin. You need to be extra cautious about what materials are used. That's why noble metals dominate the market. They don't react to much.

I would encourage you to not throw it away. It is good quality steel. Take it to your LGS and give it to them. Or I'm sure some members on here would be willing to cover shipping if you sent it to one of them.

Rust...yes of course

However...that is why they make Hoope's Number 9 etc....:D
And yes jewelry is generally of a precious metal....
Just was thinking that what makes something precious , is in this case the memories of the rifle....
Which is worth a little upkeep , like rust management.

Just was thinking outside of the box here , so to speak

Speaking only for myself the care and upkeep of things , isn't a chore or bother.
I'd consider a ring or pendant.

Andy
