I know we've had the filter here since before I was around. This was posted by admin a couple days ago on a car forum I used to frequent. (TLDR is at the end)
"So, let me just preface this by saying I'm not really hot on this. I don't really want to do it but I don't think I have a choice.
I've actually already done this for "guest" users, but logged in users have been able to see "all the words" if you know what I mean. But it looks like I'm going to have to enable the profanity filter site-wide for everyone.
Why? Bc Google and other ad providers are really starting to let me know about it. They don't want to put ads on pages that aren't "family friendly. " I see their point, and I also would like to keep things "family friendly" .... but at the same time its just people shooting the YKW and I'm basically OK with that. Its becoming more and more and more of an issue lately and unfortunately I have to go along with it.
I know site policy has been I really don't care as long as its not directed at anyone, or you're going full-on drunken sailor, but this is just how it has to be I suppose.
So, if you see certains words either completely or partially **** out, then that's what's going on. I'll change that, let it go for a while, and see if anything changes.
I'm really PO'd bc one of my ad servers is telling me that a certain word is literally ALL OVER the board and it just isn't at all. ***
It's not really up for debate, so I'm closing this thread for comments, but just know that personally IDGAF and if I'm able to turn it back off I will do so.
*** so it turns out a certain word made it into a new username yesterday, and every single page that user would load had "the word" in it, ... that one tiny detail cut my revenue IN HALF yesterday. So yeah, that's the rub."
TLDR paraphrase; 'Google won't gimme my ad moniez if you guys say a swear'
He later opened the thread for further comment and explained that this is happening to forums everywhere.
Is this really happening to all forums everywhere like he says?
Is there really no alternative because Google is too big and even the competitors have the same terms?
Is this just more internet censorship that we're supposed to just quietly accept?
Granted, having ********* in place of bubblegum won't change my life one bit. But I have to admit, the general principle of having the admin there roll over and accept it just to maintain some ad revenue kinda stings.
For the record, that site was extremely tame in the "7 words" department already. It also doesn't need to be family friendly because the average member age is probably 50 and 99.9% male.
Any insight from any of you guys who run forums of any kind?
